DVD playback off a laptop through a telly
#1
OK
Inevitably another numbskull question but here goes.....
Just got a new laptop through work with DVD playback software, got a VHS-S lead to plug into the SCART socket on the telly and still can't make the whole shebang work. When I try changing screens (function key+F7) the laptop screen goes nicely blank but nothing appears on the telly.
Any ideas much appreciated.
Cheers

Does you TV have s-vhs input on the scart?
Just cause its a scart lead and it plugs in the TV don't mean its gonna work.
I'd check the spec on ya Tv m8.

Outputs an tv signal through the TV port. Looks the same as the external monitor port, 15 pins in 3 rows, but the manual says one is for external monitor and one is for TV. - and it works

Interesting.
I've got a port for an external monitor and that's the lot. I did have a look at the advanced display settings in control panel. The option box for TV is greyed out.

AFAIK you need another box to convert the monitor signal to video signal. Might be something you can do with an updated driver. I don't play with this too much, but I'm sure someone here will know the answers. What sort of laptop is it, and what sort of video card does it have?

You could try these people....

But checking drivers etc is cheaper....
Thanks

OK, I've only done this with mac laptop (Ti Powerbook G4) but principle might be the same.
use S-video to cable to connect laptop to tv. Then turn on video monitoring, thus tv screen mirrors laptop screen, then just pop the dvd into the drive and play. volia picture on laptop and tv screen. when I tried it in usa it was really good, compared it against the 'real' dvd player we had and cold not notice the difference.

It's an IBM T22 handed out by the internal IT guys so no manuals because if all else fails I do like to RTFM!
Markus
How do you turn on video monitoring?

Kav,
just look on IBM's web site, they have all the manuals there, well they were there last time I looked. I think from memory the SVHS output is the only tv out on the laptop. If your tv does not support svhs, then a converter from svhs to composite would be the cheapest option. A converter for the monitor port would be a very expensive way of doing it and you would have to (most likely) drop the resolution on the laptop for it to work.
Why not go the whole hog and buy a cheap dvd player for around £50

I'm probably talking a load of b0ll0ck$ so just ignore me

The composite signal is the svhs signals rolled into one. Composite aka the yellow phono plug usually with the audios, red and white. As for the converter any electrical store should sort you out eg maplin's. But you should consider the cheap dvd option, much less hassle

Kav, I've a T20 that I use to play DVD's on the telly. I need two cables, one with a S-VHS plug that fits the back of the laptop to the S-VHS input on the telly (all Scarts already used) I also needed the sound from the headphone socket on the laptop to the L and R inputs alongside my tellys S-VHS socket. The T20 has a PAL monitor option in the screen properties and I need to bugger about with the resoloution to get it to fit the telly 480x960 I think. If this doesn't work I'll maybe have a go with my one and check I've not missed anything.

i think you have to have a video card with 'tv out' capability, otherwise you are computer monitor bound (refer previous thought about getting to correct tv resolution)
