Default Mathematical equation help please?

Hi

I'm trying to figure out an equation for a friend, half my hair has fallen out, can anyone help please?

Total number of tickets sold: 400
Total income from tickets: £1050
Adult ticket cost: £3
Student ticket cost: £2

The ticket costs are constant & we're trying to figure out a formulation that can be used at the end of a game when the total number of tickets & the total income is know. We just need to know the split between adult/student.

Can anyone help please?

Thanks RJMS, I had managed to figure out the answer by painstaking trial & error.

Can you suggest a formulation for this please?

a=adults s=students

a+s=400 from which s=400-a

3a+2s=1050 - using formula above 3a+2(400-a)=1050

so 3a+800-2a=1050 so a+800=1050 so a=250

From there the rest is easy

Goodness me that was quick!

Thanks very much, I'll pop this into a spreadsheet for my friend.

I could be wrong but this formula assumes that the ratio of adults to students is always 3:2, so its only useful if the attendance meets that ratio. But if the formula is only needed for this pne game then its fine.

The formulation is needed for future games really. Are you mixing the ticket prices with a ratio?

I think I am wrong, the formula seems to work fine. Well done to RJMS.

As you have probably established the 3 is the price of an adult ticket, 2 the price of a student ticket, the fact that this also describes the ratio is pure coincidence. It's really only GCSE level stuff

PM me an email addy, I'll send a done .xls over

all you need to do is enter the tickets sold, and total money in the grey fields.scroll down the red coloumn until you find a match to the tickets sold, and look across left to give you the split

I have just looked at it again, and it would seem that dave on gate 3 gave a student ticket out for free to one of his old uni mates

399 tickets works out cleanly..

ps, there was an error, replace E80 with: =(E2/100)*C80
