Befuddling for one . A quick browse through thread titles... tenant, airgunner, compomotives, gurney, etc. Slang maybe? I can usually figure it out if I read back and forth a few times, but some things don't make any sense to me.

edit... vernacular

He'll be puzzled by:

Smoking a *** (apparently that's illegal in San Francisco...unless the *** asks you to, of course)

Running around with your bum on fire. That's illegal everywhere.

Walking on the pavement (that'll get you killed in a lot of the US...and arrested in Beverley Hills)

Putting the hood up on your convertible if it rains. (But won't the engine get wet?)

There are probably many more...

For clarification:

*** = cigarette in the UK

Bum = backside/***

Pavement = Sidewalk

Hood = Roof on a convertible (or the part of a jacket which goes over your head)

HTH

To me, a *** is an insult meaning homosexual. I know bum from what channels PBS shows from the BBC, pavement to me is not the sidewalk but the road, and the hood... is over the engine. Learn something new everyday.

Don't mean to be rude, but I have to go to work. I'll be back on in a few hours if you guys have anymore.

Air gun, a rifle that uses air instead of gunpowder to propel the projectile.

What language is the empire teaching in the colonies these days?

Air gun = B-B gun ...Just to make it more confusing some words change in different areas of the states, like soda being called pop on the west coast.

Eastern Pennsylvania, its Soda. Get out near Pittsburg and its Pop. My college is right smack in the middle, and many have lost a life in the on going battle of this carbonated beverage.

Also be aware that we queue for things here rather than "get in line" or "join a line up". We, the British, are masters in the art of queuing.

Be very cautious with the word "fanny" as well. Make an unguarded observation about a ladies fanny over here and your unlikely to live to tell the tale !!
