Motorway Police.
Right, someone on here must know the answer to this.
Twice now I have come across a motorway patrol car slowly pootling along the middle lane with it's lights flashing. The traffic behind it all start slamming their brakes on, to conform to the coppers speed.
All of a sudden, the copper turns his lights off and floors it away.
I could understand it if there had been an incident a little way ahead, and the police were slowing things down until it had been cleared, but there never seems to be any evidence of anything...
Do they do this just to execute their almighty power over motorists, or because they can't find anything better to do until their next tea break?

It usually means that somewhere behind there is a stolen car being chased and Plod is making a rolling roadblock (you and those around).
Keep an eye out on the hard shoulder cos if they havn't trapped him behind thats where the crim usually escapes ...LOL
Midlife.....

It is a rolling roadblock, designed to create a break in the traffic, so people can safely maneuvre or cross the motorway for some reason. The incident would probably have cleared by the time you get to it.

That does sound like a rolling roadblock.
However what I've noticed sometimes when you get a police vehicle on the motorway that other drivers slow to below the limit and are afraid to overtake it.
Presumably they are all either on 9 points or mental cripples. Last time I saw this I had to flash an E class out of lane three as he sat there tracking the police van in lane one at just under 70. I carried on at 80 as usual and didn't have any problem whatsoever with our porcine pals.
I don't see any problem out accelerating them either if a suitable opportunity presents itself.

not true little ginge, all worthy replies and explanations, but the real reason is they were slightly concerened at your ability to maintain or even achieve the national speed limit and were simply slowing down all those fast cars and make everyone slow down to a more suitable speed, so you didnt panic when someone did 60 mph.
and then they accelerated the hell out of there in case you got anywhere near them

Defo rolling roadblock - a friend managed to spin his car, with a car on a trailer behind it, on the M6. Went round perfectly in line and ended up facing the wrong way in the middle lane, with three lines of tracffic stopped looking at them
They moved on to the hard shoulder, facing the wrong way. The poice set up a rolling road block to create a gap in the traffic and they did a U turn across 3 lanes !!
There would have been nothing to see when the road block cleared, cos they were back on their way

Although i've heard of someone getting pulled for beating a traffic T5, they claimed it was too agressive and bordering on wreckless driving - think they were just bad loosers

I got caught up in one of these today on the M6 near shap...
coppers up ahead with about 300 yds of crawling traffic behind...
next thing, a honda accord doing at least a ton flies down the hard shoulder with 2 police volvos in hot pursuit!
Bit of a dangerous strategy if you ask me, if some old doris had decided that her car was getting a bit warm for example, and pulled onto the hard shoulder without looking ( to be fair, who would ? ), there would have been carnage!

Rolling blocks are used for all sorts of things, as has been mentioned to create a gap in the traffic for something further up the carriageway normally, can be anything from removing debris from the lanes to clearing accident sites or to assist with setting up roadworks.
Failure to comply with a rolling block, ie trying to breach it, is an endorsable offence I believe
