Question 3.5 3.9 V8 engines

im going to cram a 3.9 V8 into my triumph 2ooo and was wondering what the changes are between a 3.5 and 3.9 rover v8.

Is it possible to chnage from 3.5 to 3.9 easily? I can have a 3.5 engine and gearbox off a mate for £50 but i want a 3.9!

anbody know?

Aren't they the same block? Should be a straight swap from a 3.5 to a 3.9. (May be wrong though, I'm not a mechanic)

Externally, they're exactly the same.

I take it you mean teh Rover unit - my buddy changed his block from a 3.5 to a 3.9 and externally there is no difference at all.

Try Rpi engineering they will be able to help you

Yeah I would agree there. Initial cost is a tad dearer but from what I've heard, small block Fords (and Chevys) are cheaper to tune than the old Buick block. Depends how far you wanna go but I'm guessing that if you're thinking of 3.9 over the 3.5 then you want bigger bhp. Dunno if the Rover transplant is easier with the relation to the Stag V8 thing but it would be worth looking into. Still can't beat the sound of a Hemi on full song though

steer clear of the 4.6 I recon. headgaskets were an issue.
power to weight has to be considered and a ford or other Iron block V8 will weigh it down too much and it'll handle like a pig on a skating rink.

there were some small changes to the externals but nothing that can't be un bolted and changed over.

4.6 was a reliable as you like in the three Range Rovers we ran... Lots of torque too

But I'd go for the 3.9 for reliable power, maybe with some TVR bits?

SB

PS Sounds like an excellent project. Keep it discreet, though, so people sit there wondering exactly what just happened as you disappear in a haze of shredded tyre...

All your questions answered: http://www.ajmac.co.uk/v8-swops.htm

Gearboxes are interchangable...bolt pattern remains the same throughout. If its a ZF 4HP22, make sure its correctly shimmed or it'll wreck the oil pump (on the gearbox).
