Default Curve of the Earth question

How high do you have to be, to be able to see the curve of the earth?

Always been curious about this, anyone any ideas?

you can technically as its the horizon - if you watch a ship with a big mast come into view you will see it 'rise' over it

I couldn't see it from Concorde. Didn't look much different to your average flight.

From the ground...

Salt Flats in Utah

and I quote
Each rainfall erases tire marks and flattens the densely-packed salt pan that is inhospitable to plantlife. The area is extremely flat and nearly aligned perfectly with the shape of the Earth, allowing visitors to see the curvature of the planet by producing an optical illusion that makes many of the mountains within the vicinity appear to be floating in the air since their bases are on the other side of the curve and thus out-of-sight.

You needed to go up to the cockpit on Concorde to see the curvature. Then VERY obvious. It is still one of the most amazing sights of my life.
Must have been one of the best value deals of all time .: Champagne breakfast at Heathrow, Concorde at Mach 2 over Irish sea with full commentary from engine stat up onwards by flight engineer, up to cockpit, then subsonic to Le Mans with a fly past on the Mulsanne and a vertical climb over the main stands, coach from Tours to circuit, centre stand seats, hotel and Concorde home: £550 !!!!! Went for a ride on the bike to Lands End last Friday (Live in Plymouth) and yeah the horizon is so uninterupted from that viewpoint you can just make out the curvature.

At sea you can see the curvature from the bridge quite easily.
In an aircraft, over the sea, it is noticable at sea level almost. Over a Continent, subject to the topography, it is very noticable at, say 30,000 feet but over the Alps it is not noticable for obvious reasons.

You can see it from the ground, kind of. Look up at an aircraft cruising at high altitude & it appears to be climbing when in fact it is in level flight.
