Default Insurance implications for a period of non car ownership?

I've been a Subaru owner for the last couple of years, but due to ongoing illness it looks like the car is going to have to go (only done 800 miles in the last year - half of which were driven by someone else when I was in the car).

When the car goes I am not intending to replace it, I am planning on sharing the use of my parents cars during my recovery period (which may be a couple more years).

What happens to my no claims bonus during this time?

If mum has already insured her car for herself with her own policy, could I also insure that car under my own name in order for it to appear that I am still an active motorist in order to retain my full NCB? The bonus of doing this would also mean that if I had a crash it would affect my insurance rather than hers?

A car cannot be insured twice, in the event of a claim you will be found out somewhere along the lines.

Some insurance companies are now giving named drivers the same no claims discount as the policy holder so that might be something to look into.

Other than that, look throught the scrap yard for a car with a plate and insure that if it's cheap.

I don't think you automatically loose NCB anyway. I had a policy from a westfield, and my insurers would have taken the NCB from this as long as it was within 3 yrs ( IIRC ) of that policy expiring.

Not sure if it applies to all insurance co's though, I suppose the best bet would be to get on the phone and ask them.

Go to a scrappers and buy anything in insurance gp.1 (Fiat Panda etc) which hasn't been written off, get them to crush it and stick it under a bush at the bottom of your garden. Insure it 3rd party only each year. A mate of mine did this after passing his test at 17 but not being able to afford to run a car. At 21 when he bought his first car he had 4 years NCD, even though he'd never driven
