Default Banger racing incident, what do you reckon.

Have always been a fan of Banger Racing, dont go very often these days but used to go a lot so I know what goes on, its a bit like wrestling in that generally any agression on the circuit is a bit contrived and within boundaries, usually you get a bit of a grudge match but a spin deserves a spin but today for the first time I saw a gar get spun and then the driver of the spun car decided to go the wrong way around the track to exact his revenge.

Basically he met the other car head on with enormous force, he got out but the other driver was being cut free by the Fire Service (we left whilst this was in progress), marshalls were holding up blankets so the spectators could not see what was going on, I suspect that he was very badly injured, I heard mention that his legs were mangled, knees smashed etc, hence why we came away.

Its a dangerous sport, probably why all the trophies are 'memorial cups' for one or another driver and I have seen some hard impacts and stretchers but have never (well apart from in junior mini stocks but thats youth) seen such a deliberate act that could have only been to hurt the other driver.

I suspect that this could end up with Police involved, what do you reckon ?

Banger racing is a pikey sport, competed by men with hi vis jackets and rigger boots.

I'm suprised there is not more agro in this scrap yard racing.

He'll get a life ban and a fine.

I've also seen a marshall run over after some idiot decided to cut across the infield to get back at someone else.

The sport hould have far tighter control IMO.

As for the incident above, liability may be a problem as you sign most of that away. There maybe cause for a civil or criminal case if there was intent to cause harm.

Cheers
Lee

It was High Edge at Buxton.

It is indeed a bit Pikey but good fun, need to let my kids see how other sections of society have fun, quite diverse really as they have been skiing, had Sailing lessons and been to see Banger Racing, they were the only kids there with hair longer than 3 millimetres, anyway, I am nothing special and obviously, despite nowadays being a bit middle class have that Pikey gene in there somewhere.

There was a lady there with more gold than BA Barracus, now I saw here her husband, I pity the fool....

Banger racing is an evil sport and should be banned. it promotes the theft of classic cars

Yep, I bet the Nissan Bluebird owners club is up in arms about the carnage on display today.

Think about it though, if most Granada's were not wrecked on the Banger oval then they wouldnt be the rare and valuable classic they are today, most of the cars wrecked at banger tracks are beyond saving, a lot of the trim and stuff stripped from them ends up with owners clubs anyway.

Anyway, I was kind of more concerned about the driver with the smashed up legs.

Jacko, I used to race at high edge in the bangers, then super bangers. After a while i raced in the lightening stox as it was "non" contact......

It is dangerous, and as a rule scrap yard owners are the only people who can keep up with the cars needed to compete in any form of banger racing..And we all know what kinda people own scrappers!!!I have seen many people have head on "accidents",mostly on purpose, its a rutting stag kinda thing!!

I got followed into the pit wall at 60mph+ at high edge,it pushed the boot lid way above my head, snapped the rear diagonals on the roll cage, and concertina'd the roof rails to the extent that it closed the window apertures to under 5" at the sides and i had to be cut out.Luckily i was shaken up but no harm done..Lee Holland wasnt so lucky,he did die in a race i entered...After seeing the aftermath it was time to give up...I lasted 8 years,it was more than enough looking back on it..

I doubt anyone could prove any intent to hurt the poor bloke/girl that got injured.

Like boxing or any other contact event/sport (bager racing's not sport?) there's surely an implied danger that anyone doing takes on board?

I dont agree with head ons in banger racing, its like two cars hitting a brick wall! Apart from that i think its a great sport to watch. J4CKO just because they have memorial races doesn't allways mean these people died driving bangers. There have been a couple of people killed over the years doing banger racing, but as with any motorsport its a risk, and if cars are built correctly, which 99% are, there isn't much more they can do to prevent people getting injurd.

I helped at Odsal years ago as a kid opening the big steel gate to let the cars onto the track. I was told the guys in the banger races were often high as a kite such are the idiots that decide to do this sort of thing...... dunno how much truth there is in that

The lad in question had bones sticke from his foot, still manged a ride around in the pace car, they are nutters, 4/5 months before he can walk again.

The memorial races might not be for those killed actually racing a Banger but I think death or serious injury is more likely than say in anything bar the TT, to be honest the cars dont look that well built, the super bangers do being basically a tank but the ordinary bangers are just old Nissans, without the interior you can see the insidious places where they rot like round the rear seat belt anchor point.

Fatscoobyfella, respect for having the bottle to do that for 8 years, were you indeed high as a kite ?

No Comment on that one mate!!! To be honest, there were a few people with the "westbrook syndrome"..Personally i never dabbled, had a few beers to steady the nerves from time to time, but that was it..

As for the cars being poorly built, well in normal bangers you couldnt strenghten shell in any way.Basically kick out the windows, pull out the trim, relocate fuel tank and rad and you was away. Not forgeting roll cage of course.

super bangers were full on,do whatever you wanted really..many of the fella's(inc myself) ran Escort Mk1+2's,lightly armoured with a semi race all steel engine. These were quick, the only disadvantage was racing with Jags and Granada's.They couldnt catch you,but if they did, they made a mess of you if they wanted too!!!

In my own paticular tussle with a Jag,i was going down the pit straight at high edge.I broke for the bend and the jag didnt(on purpose),he just lifted the rear of my car and then he buried the throttle and used me for a cushion between the wall and his Jag..That resulted in the damage mentioned in the previous post..My car was finished...As for retribution,i smashed the driver of the jag in the face with my new Arai Giga helmet..6 months ban ensued..

Thats banger racin!! ha ha......
