Hurray - liability admitted!!
About 6 weeks ago, a police dog van reversed in to my wife's S3 and the young officer denied it, saying that she hit him.
The IDR report has just come through confirming that the police van was in reverse travelling at 8mph at the point of impact, so they've admitted full liability! We can finally get a new grill, number plate and have the bumper re-sprayed

Full story was after the police van reversed into her, my wife got out of her car but the officer driving didn't for a good half a minute. She's a bit of a hothead so she was screaming at him to get out. As soon as he got out he accused her of driving into him and was generally threatening (nothing frightens her though!). She demanded he call a senior officer. When his sargeant arrived, the police officer strenuously denied reversing but being driven into by my wife. The sarge took the details down and my wife made it known that he took a while to get out of the car.
I went to the police station with my wife that night (she got a producer) and she made a formal complaint about his threatening behavouir. A senior officer then told us that all police vehicles have an IDR machine which is activated upon impact - it then records the last 45 seconds of the car's activity (speed, gear, etc). If it's not activated because the impact is not severe enough, the driver can manually start it by pressing a button, so the report would clearly show who was lying.
It was then that we understood why he didn't get out of the car - he was no doubt waiting for the 45 seconds to be up before pressing the button manually - this way, his car would be stationary and he would be in the clear.
Anyway, after 6 weeks of phonecalls, the IDR report has now been received confirming that he was in reverse and he hit her.
As for the officer himself, I'm not sure what happens to him. The fact that she made a formal complaint about him and the fact that it's now been proved that he was lying, he must be in trouble, surely?????

must be an idiot, why lie about something like that, seems crazy. Anyone could make that mistake and reverse into someone but to try and cover it up and then try to blame someone else needs a strange mindset.

But this IDR machine puzzles me ? you say it activates upon impact and records the previous 45 seconds of the car's activity, how does it record something that has already happened ? or is it monitoring the vehicle all the time and when activated records the next 45 seconds ?

Dazza - I'm sure it actually continually records but can only store 45 sec. At impact it will stop recording (and hence overwriting previous data) - so you have the last 45 secs saved.
With solid state memory laughably cheap now - I'm very surprised its only 45 secs.

From a quick google
An Incident Data Recorder is a Home Office approved, permanently installed electronic device which can record and store precise driving data relating to a vehicle when the equipment is triggered by a collision, incident or event.
The information recorded includes speed, operation of the brakes, forwards and sideways acceleration, operation of lights and emergency warning equipment (including blue lights and sirens).
Following any impact, the IDR will automatically activate the incident mode and retain 60 seconds of precise information, 40 seconds prior to impact and 20 seconds post impact. The device is capable of storing eight separate incidents within its memory.
The device will also store anything up to 28 days of journey data which will provide detailed information of vehicle usage over that period, including for example harsh braking or excessive speed over a traffic calming hump.
Data from the device is evidence which can safeguard the driving integrity of staff or be used for misconduct and court purposes. A notice inside police vehicles, within the driver’s view, will indicate that the vehicle is fitted with an IDR. The devices cannot record voices in the vehicle.
