Write off categories?
Hi,
I recently bought a motorcycle that was a write off, for some of the bits- exhaust and engine etc.
The previous owner thinks it was a cat B write off- anyway he had to send the V5 for it back to the insurance company/ DVLA.
Question is- can I re-apply for this and get the V5 back?
If so, how?

As far as I know, CAT A is to be crushed, CAT B can be spares, CAT C can be repaired and CAT D is minor damage. I recently discovered an ALFA 156 I had had been written off CAT C, my HPI check didn't show thid either.

I hate to argue; but yes you can. The local VRO will certainly want to inspect the vehicle; the V23 marker will attract the interest of your local Stolen Vehicle Squad too.
The ABI categories dont have any legal standing; so CatA or CatB status dont have any legal bearing. In my experience there are plenty of CatB vehicles that will repair and many many CatCs that should have destruction orders on them.

Cat D is just apply for the V5 ( £19 ), MOT & tax it... Job done...
Cat C is apply for the V5 ( £19 ), MOT & tax it... but you'll in most cases, get a letter back from the dvla saying the car has been written off, blah blah blah, and will need to go for a VIC... which is another £36 quid, although once the car has passed, you can claim you £19 quid back you had to pay when you applied for the V5...

I did try google first but didnt know about the reapplying.
Apparently bikes dont even need the VIC- its only for cars I think. Besides the vehicle comprises of a frame at the moment
I basically just want to sell the frame which is fine to use- just need a V5 with it.

I was looking for the exact same information. Thanks. You are right the bikes do not need vic.
I found some information on google, basically I might not get the same value for my car that I think its worth. Apparently needs haggling. Has anyone ever had this situation before if their car was a total loss, did you get the value of your car back in the end? Is it a very, very low value they give you? Who can you complain to?
In case anyone else wants to read it http://www.carinsuranceonline.org.uk...swriteoff.html

allways declared as previoisly accident damaged when sold, people are happy they get cheap cars, for instance, the punto will be £2295, only done 15000 miles, fsh and still has 9 months main dealer warrentee remaining
the ka £1500 2001 x plate 50,000 miles
as long as there repaired well, look pretty people dont care

I guess as long as you're declaring the history openly then the buyer can make an informed decision as to the level of risk they want to assume offset against the potential saving.
I went to look at a saab 93 rag-top last week from a trader (ironically was in southampton) that had so obviously been repaired from a hefty front ender it was embarrassing. No mention of it up front and a lot of sheepish noises about discounts when pushed about its previous.
