spelling grammar question
in our post office window we have a sign in the window advertising that we tax motor vehicles, now we had this clever chap in telling me that it was incorrect and says that it annoyed his wife every time they go past(think there retired school teachers ) he had great delight in tell us that it was wrong. can anyone on here confirm that it correctly sign written or is its just poor grammar on the sign writer part. bearing in mind the sign has been up for over 6 years and they are the only ones that have made such comments.
now the sign is written:- licence your vehicle here
what he says it should say is:- licences your vehicle here
so can anyone tell me which is correct?
cheers

From the interweb somewhere ...
"licence or license
Rremember that licence is the noun and license is the verb. In American English, however, the noun is spelled license. To remember the spellings, think of advice (noun) and advise (verb)"
So, it should be 'License your vehicle here' assuming your PO is in the UK ....
Hope that helps ...
Dave
PS: 'A' at English Language 'O' Level .....

This is looking like the best ever 'Thickie' award nomination.
I'm imagining the conversation you have had with the ex-schoolteacher went something like this.
"What's wrong with the sign Mr"?
"License is with an 's'"
So you added it to the end!!!
