End of the day it's whatever works for you bri - if you feel comfortable running that way.

I overpronate a bit so I have running shoes that are harder on the inside of the foot to offset this (New Balance 857). If there is a http://www.runningshoes.org.uk/ branch near you then it's worth visiting them for some advice. the Watford branch is kitted up with a treadmill and video camera so you can see how you run and the guys can advise you better.

Running with a limp sound more like an injury to me though...

try to disconnect your breathing rhythm from the rhythm of your running strides. it's difficult, but you'll feel better for it.

make sure you exercise your upper body too. makes a big difference.

i used to do half marathons and trained 40 miles a week.

I was completely addicted to the buzz you get after about 5 miles

what do you mean about disconnecting your beathing rhythm...?

i was also told that longer strides are more efficient...?!

Seriously mate, it forces you to regulate your breathing - ok, you look a prat but give it a go when you are getting out of breath.

I run at 10pm that way the roads are clear of groups of youths hanging around to avoid. Dont run past loads of traffic laughing at you for struggling to breath aswell as the added benefit if it being cooler in the evenings

Proper shoes will make all the difference. I'm heavy around, hovering around 85 kilos and was told that the ASICS shoes I had weren't upto the job being made for lighter 'runner' types.
Got a pair of Saucony for the mild over pronater and find I can do much larger distances without pain.

I think one of the main things with almost every sport, is to stay relaxed. Don't tense up - not as easy as it sounds - and you'll run a lot more smoothly. If it's not going well, remind yourself to loosen up, and it'll come back together again

Works in rowing & cycling anyway

My tips
Proper Shoes a must.
Find your own rythem. Kind of need to settle down into a steady pace you are comfortable with.
We used to also practise breathing just through our noses. Gets your body used to relying on less oxygen. So when you have to use your mouth it feels easier. (The same principle as boxing with hand weights and then taking them off - your hands feel lighter and faster).
You have good days and bad days. If its a bad day and your legs feel like lead just go home after 15mins and give it a go another day.

Steve
