I bought my comp from carrera ssc, they are the cheapest I can find on the web and all the comps have quality components the only advice I can give is to destroy windows bloody 2000 and stick with 98!

I also had a pc from mesh, used it for 3 years and never ever had to re-format it, it was the most reliable machine I had ever used, the poor bugger is now all tired and used as a server!

I'm looking to upgrade my old clone PC.

Currently it's a PII 450Mhz, with 256Mb of RAM in an ATX case.

I'm guessing I can reuse nearly everything, and will only need to get a new motherboard, processor and memory.

Question is who is doing a good price bundle at the moment??

I have no preference as to whether it's a AMD or Intel, but I do want at least 256Mb and a fast processor.

Is this do-able for about £200? Any ideas, companies, etc welcome!

Cheers
Andy

Ps - The motherboard has to be compatiable with my new 60Gb HDD, which is not recognised by my motherboard!

If you want to get rid of your old kit let me know what you've got left over, I'm after bits for a Linux cluster.

No worries Steve, but I think my brother and sister will be taking all the useful bits. I'll see what's left over and I'll drop you a mail!

Andy,

I recently bought a brand new PC from MESH. The quality of components used is top notch, price was very good too. But after sales is crap (I dont need it though, so u may not also)

Andy,

Don't forget to include a new 300-350w power supply. It's more than likely your old one is'nt up to the job

Cem, support is not an issue!

Good point Neil, I don't think the 230w PSU will be up to the job!

Cheers
Andy

OK, the shopping list is now:

Processor
Motherboard
Memory
Case (as it's normally the same cost as a new PSU!)

Cheers
Andy

Ps - Anything I should watch out for, things that won't be compatible, that sort of thing?

If you go the AMD route, may as well get a DDR motherboard too.......

I bought an EpoX 8K7A+ and would recommend it, along with an AMD 1.4GHz Thunderbird, 512MB DDR RAM, ThermoEngine heat sink+fan (NECESSARY WITH AMD) and an Enermax 431W job.

Check scan.co.uk's today only page regularly and often...

I upgraded my computer about a month or so ago, and I looked at www.scan.co.uk and then wandered down to tottenham court road and tried to beat the price.

I ended up with:

AMD 1.4
512K DDR Memory
A-Bit MotherBoard
350W Case

for about £340.

So go haggle if you live in London.

Thumbs up

Andy,

Try Graham @ 50-50-40 computer systems in MK (01908 505040).

He's a great guy, does unbeatable systems (quality wise), sources quality components for sensible money, and will always find time to chat to people about theie requirements and options whether they buy or not. We've had countless machines off him over the years without any problems. Oh, and he's my best mate, but don't hold that against him

Josh
