Fuji Heavy boosts component sharing with GM
Subaru car maker Fuji Heavy Industries is to increase component sharing with General Motors, which holds a 20 percent share of Fuji.
The Japanese company has just announced a profit fall of 30 percent and plans to reduce its costs by sharing 10 percent of components with GM this year. The proportion will gradually increase to 30 percent.
Subaru's unique horizontally-opposed (boxer) four and six cylinder engines and all wheel drive systems won't be shared though Fuji Heavy will take a major role in developing four wheel drive technology for companies in the GM group.
This latest co-operation between Fuji and GM follows earlier announcements that GM's Asia-Pacific region dealers will sell Subaru while its Thai plant builds Opel-designed Zafira seven-seat minivans for sale by Subaru in Japan.
