Default Recomend me a Free View box

I've just changed my TV from an old integrated digital set to a new BIGGGGGGGG plasma .

Now I need to get a good free view box.

Although my old set had it built in, the menu system, digital text, EPG was a load of rubbish. So, what's good and what should I avoid?

Cheers

Have a troll around in the Freeview and PVR forums on AV Forums. Last time I looked they were recommending staying away from all the major brands, especially Panasonic, and going for the cheaper unknown names as they seemed to work so much better. The ones which spring to mind are the Topfield, Humax and Fusion. Aim for a twin tuner with at least an 80g HD.

I bought one of the Aldi boxes when they first came out and nearly took it back it was always losing signal and sound. But after four software upgrades it's quite good. The only problem it has now is when the HDD is full it wipes all the programs of. It hardly ever crashes anymore for £99 you can't beat it.

I hav ethe older (single tuner) Humax 8000T and it's been one of the best purchases I've made. Easy to use, EPG is great, Text is fast.

How do you do the upgrades?
I haven't tried that yet.

Press menu on the control, go into settings / configuration you will see reciever upgrade. It should show ver 1.6 it was shipped with version 1.1. Auto upgrade may have been on in which case it will do it automatically if not you can do a manual upgrade.

I've had a Topfield 5800 PVR since January. Best bit of kit I've bought in ages. Two reasons I got this over the Humax

1) Ability to install TAPs (Topfield Application Programs) which can give you all sorts of funtionality such as different EPGs and Timer managment, MP3 and JPG playback.

2) Humax did not have chase play, though I suspect this may have been fixed with a firmware update.

Take a look at www.toppy.org.uk. I'm a user there too with the name username. Lots of good support and advice
