Eyes are supposed to be a big problem with them, look for cherry eye and inward growing eye lids IIRC. cant remember the proper name for it but its a common problem.

My Aunt & Uncle had one, docile thing, noisy and daft. Lived to a ripe old age.
No advice apart from their ears usually get in a mess as they drag in the water/food bowls.

Here's a few piccies of my Basset, Harvey.
As a Puppy
Now (2years & 4 months old)
We got one after spending a LONG time deciding what breed to get.
They are brilliant dogs, very stubborn but very well natured. Make sure you get one from a registered & well recommended breeder as they can be prone to a few health problems.
One last thing, if you don't have a woman before you get a basset, you will after. I love taking him for a walk as you get so much attention from women
