paedophile poll - for parent
having a heated debate with a colleugue who's rather more liberal than me.
Question - If a convicted paedo moved in to your street, would you want to know?
Interesting question really, I said yes straight away, but then thought what would I actually do about it? I don't agree with vigilantism (SP), but I also don't believe people who comit acts like this should have any human rights.
My colleugue (who isn't a parent) though that if her kid was attacked by what turned out to be a known perv, she would be angry with the justice system for letting him be free, but not angry with not having known. I find that hard to undetstand / believe, though I agree the justice sysem leaves a lot to be desired.
We also discussed the same issue with for example muderers and car theives, but it's a different issue. Most people would be p!ssed off is their car got nicked. Most parents would want to kill someone who raped their little girl / boy.
Discuss!

I think your statement "but what would I do?" is a good one. Me too.
Isn't it that most of them know their victims? So it could be a neighbour - but could also be a member of the family.
I can only teach my daughter, like I said to my son, that anyone who starts to say "This will be our little secret" is saying it because they're scared of going to jail for the rest of their life.

Acting like a vigilante would be wrong and against the law of course.
I would be careful to warn my children to avoid him at all costs, If he offended again I would be making loud noises to the authorities about it and asking for an enquiry into the performance of the authority which released him.
