You can buy suntan and after sun lotion from boots with added insect repellent...
failing that eat loads of garlic...you won't smell like ICI, but you might smell like a frenchman

Soltan from Boots(sunlotion with insect repellent)
Buy one get one free as well,i think.
You can buy repellents separately as well from Boots.
Don't buy cheap ones from Tescos. They don't work well against hardcore mosquitos and **** like that

Only thing that keeps midges off up here(not syaing they are tough but they wear boots) is Avon Skin So Soft. Would think if it can keep them off - it will work on anything. Psst even the army use it.
Smells ok too.

I bought 100% deet spray when I went to Australia. It's so strong it melts plastic, yet the flies just seem to ignore it totally.
My mates bird had some namby pamby girly lemon smelling organic spray, which weirdly seemed to work better...

DEET is by far the best mozzie repelant i have ever used and is recommended in places where Malaria is present - Jungle formula have some of their range with it in and it prob smells a bit better than the plain stuff.

After one week of being bitten to **** in Turkey I bought a plug-in mozzie repellent and 'Jungle Formula Extra Strength Tropical Use' insect repellent from Superdrug for my return the next week and didnt get bitten once*. Both odour free.
*This could of course be down to the fact that they couldn't find any fresh flesh to bite
