Attn Road Cyclists
I've just entered the Bealach-na-ba sportif in the north of scotland and I'm not paping myself with the thought of almost 10'000ft of climb in 90 miles.
Anyone else doing this or any other huge run as a challenge this summer.
Craig.

Sounds a tough one M8, i've been and done the Karrimor Trail at Coedy brenin north wales and that was 1100 Metres of climbs in 38km all off road, that was a tough one, don't mind the climbs so much on my road bike, the rolling resistence is so much less, mind u after 90 miles and 10,000 ft i'm sure i'd not be saying that!!
Good luck with it, and if you've got a mountain bike have a go @ http://www.transrockies.com/ thats a proper challenge

It's not the main climb that's worrying me now but the other 84 miles that account for most of the climb think I'll be doing intervals till I puke all month
Transrockies looks ace I'd love to do it for the challenge

Even driving over the Pass Of Cattle if tiring mate!! As for cycling up it!! Sweet lord!
I go to that part of the world every year (staying in Poolewe) north of Kinlochewe and Applecross but normally do more walking than cycling up there..
Good luck with it - that's gonna be seriously tough!

Good luck fella This is our local hell of the north http://www.fredwhittonchallenge.org.uk/ over 4000m of climbing. If you want a enter your've got to be quick, last year the 600 places went in 4 days. Hardknott at 96 miles is the killer 35% in places, anything less than a 27 on the back and your walking!

Good luck, looks really tough! Scenery should be fantastic though. Has given me food for thought for next year.
I'm doing a 250 mile ride from Plymouth to Bristol which should involve quite a bit of climbing on the moors, though not as much as yours.
Details are at www.pedal.org.uk (plug, plug) feel free to sponsor us if you wish.

I've read about the Fred witton and and had a look at the pictures and it's scary the gradient in some of these roads.
I have to say I'm just a middle of the road club rider at the moment. I'm planning on hitting the training harder over the next 8 weeks until the event but I have a good base now.
one thing I allways do on club runs is race up hills. So at the moment I really need to change my way of doing and find a good cadence and grind up all my local hills with the 25 on the back. Train like that and only get my local shop to fit me a 27 the day before the event so I have it as a bail out gear.

Done it a few times on a 23 but not after 96miles and 5 major passes. A 27 IMO is a minimum a 30 block would be safer, anything bigger and you've got to be careful because the short cage road mech might not cope. Quite a lot of people use triples which are good for that ride but not needed really the rest of the time.
RB5-Black your idea with the blocks is good I use a 23 for all my training, then put the 27 on for big rides like the whitton. Only thing to watch out for if the training block is worn make sure you put a new chain on as well, last thing you need is a mechanical on the day due to a jumping chain.
Messiah - go on you know you want too.
