Both good and bad, purchasing only though.
Won a bid for a Gucci watch (wasn't for me -- it was for the missus) which was dirt cheap (it was over Christmas and not many people bidding). E-mailed the guy, no answer. A week later it was readvertised so I sent him a snot-a-gram. He claimed to have e-mailed me twice and got no reply (all the other mail arrived fine...). I suspect he wasn't happy with the price it went for (I think it was 40 quid...) but he got his come-uppance as it went for even less next time around.
Also bought a NIB DDS-2 DAT drive for 51 quid with no problems. Works fine, was shipped within a few days.
YMMV, etc.

I've bought a few things bike rack(fine and cheap),Nav CD's for GPS(3xal Good), Winter tyres and wheels for my car(OK but wheels had a few scratches that were not mentioned but still cheap) and a Sony Playstation. Fix a price you'd be happy to pay then put in a max of 50% of the difference and see if anyone outbids it, if they do then put in next 25% if same punter comes back then either put in your wack or back away. There will always be another offer.

Using a combination of e-bay and Yahoo auctions I flogged nearly £2000 worth of CDs, books and computer parts this year (and spent half of it back again on more computer bits etc.!!!). Never had any problems but I always stipulate I will not post sold items until cheques have cleared.
E-bay is a well established site and seems to attract genuine punters who will play by the rules. Yahoo (perhaps because it is free) despite having a similar mechanism of feedback and ratings seems to attract the less reliable bidders and sellers. Hope this is helpful.

Have only tried it recently and have had 2 good experiences.
The first item was shipped from USA, within 8days using PayPal to pay.
The second took about 2 weeks from USA.
I think E-Bay provide free insurance on items over £15? Incase you never get the items. See if you can find out about that.

I've bought qquite a bit on qxl - http://www.qxl.com and ebay both from uk and abroad.
Only ever had a problem once when a rockford amp took 4 months to arrive, other than that had some great bargains.
Saying that, someone moaned at me the other day as i kept bidding against them for an item (surely thats the point?) made more depressing by his impreza style username made me wonder if he was on here.
