Exclamation Two very good reasons not to get married.

The law won't help you when they decide to cash in and take you to the cleaners:

Julia McFarlane is entitled to £250,000 a year from her ex-husband for life!!

Melissa Miller can keep the £5m she was awarded. The Millers, were married for two years and nine months and had no children when they split.

"A judge decided Mrs Miller was entitled to a substantial settlement because she married with "reasonable expectation" of a future wealthy lifestyle."

In fairness, it says that McFarlane was married for 18 years and gave up a City job to have a home life. That's a sacrifice.

For the other, marrying with expectation of a wealthy lifestyle - doesn't seem right. (But note he was adulterous.)

Straight out the Heather Mills Rule Book

Absolutely crazy.

Although reading the link, one of them was married for 18 years so can understand why she might be entitled to a bigger payout. But for the woman that has only been married for 2 years, then I can't see why she should expect or get a massive payout!

Maybe the judge had his ISA under Millers fund management and is pissed at the returns!

It makes it sound like hubby held a gun to her head and made her give up her job. I would hope it was a joint decision and that she ought to be prepared to accept some of the consequences of that decision, it seems not.

Any man considering marriage in this day and age seriously needs his head looking at, its simply too much of a financial risk. I wasn't even married and ended up getting striped by my ex, thank god I never made it to the altar.

??? If I agreed to something at great cost to me, with natural presumption that it would be compensated for the rest of my life, and the compensation then stopped 20 or 30 years before expected, I'd be a bit pissed off. What are you talking about, consequences? Do you mean risk? And why do you imply that she should accept them but the husband shouldn't?

Just read this story on the BBC website and knew there'd be a thread in here! For the lady that had onlt been married for 2 years he was the one that committed adultery - I certainly hope she was worth it!

Secondly the other couple made a 'joint decision' - so of course she had to stay home. If they wanted to 'maximise their income' then this was the only logical step - the glass ceiling is solidly in place - in top earning jobs women seriously struggle to match the earning potential of men. Plus, as he is clearly an ambitious achiever, I can just imagine the discussion they had - and I can't believe for one second that he was pushing to be the stay at home dad!

Thirdly, women get fleeced by men all the time - I know from bitter experience - it's not always one way traffic.

On the subject of wy you shouldn't get married, and by way of a bit of light-hearted relief:

Q. What's the difference between your job and your wife?

A. After 10 years, your job still sucks!!!!

Ns04

Apologies to the SN ladies, I'm jesting and don't mean any offence.

True, but in terms of monetary settlements, I wonder what proportion are women 'fleecing' men?

I wonder if she'll continue to give him the 'sexual compensation' he presumed he'd be receiving for the rest of his life?

We're not all money grabbing bitches. I certainly did not take my ex to the cleaners when we parted. Just being free was enough.
Don't generalise.

in the 2 year case (i think the other one was reasonable) the judge ruled in her favour largely because she had married with a reasonable expectation of a wealthy lifestyle. So gold-digging is ok then?

BTW I got totally fleeced by my ex, and I was labelled the bad guy just for being male, even though she was doing the deed with my 'mate'

Can anybody cite an case where a couple divorced where the guy was massively in debt and the court awarded 25-50% of the debt to the woman?

It didn't get to court as I was told I didn't have a leg to stand on. He'd rather cleverly put the debts in joint names (this sort of thing seems perfectly normal when you're married), he had no money - so it wasn't a case that I got 50% it was a case of me getting 100% of all the debts. Of course I had a choice - I could have refused to pay his half and let them reposses the house......

Oh - and there were the credit/ debit cards for the joint bank account that the bank told me I couldn't freeze without his agreement.

Does that answer your question?

He was the one who couldn't keep it in his trousers - how does that make her a gold digger? It's clear from the ruling that his adultery was an influencing factor in the judges decision.

Very true Ted. There's a prime example on this thread:

http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/showthread.php?t=517718

These sorts will have the shirt off your back given half a chance, then laugh at you all the way to the bank. As dishonest and untrustworthy as the day is long. Avoid like the plague.
