Default Need some quick advice..for my neice

Hopefully mods will allow an ebay link
My neice (17) is bidding on a small car (her first) and has seen this car on ebay

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...7973%26fvi%3D1

(sorry forgotten how to do small clicky's)

Basically its bid stands at around £900 and with her savings, she can afford the car and the insurance, however in the description, it needs a new cam follower (what ever the hell that is )

Could anyone cast their eye over this car and maybe give me an idea what she might expect to pay for the work and also if the car looks ok to you guys.
It only has just under 4 hours to go, so hence the urgency.
thx in advance

If i should post this in other marquees to get a quick response, just tell me.

Why dont you ring the woman selling it and ask for the number of the garage who diagnosed it as a cam follower? They should be able to give you an idea on cost

Wink

Give a Ford garage, and a local garage you use, a ring, and ask for a ballpark figure for replacement of at least one cam-follower on that MY of that car.

With that many watching, expect it to shoot up near the end though

Judging by the miles and the necessary cam follower work, she'd be far better off taking a look in the Auto Trader where lower mileage examples, without the need for the necessary engine work, are advertised for a similar price, and from a dealer.

thanks for all the replies so far
just found out from a local ford garage that the part is £10.99 plus 1/2 hour labour so fairly cheap..god I wish scoob parts were that cheap

yes it is fairly high mileage and i have found another one that has only 40k on the clock and newer..still got 9 days to go though.

40 watchers mean that it will probably shoot up, so thx for that advice mate

Thing is the part may be cheap but your still not sure it is that part until you have spoken to the people who have diagnosed it I would definatley ring the seller and get the name and address of the diagnosing garage

"cam follower" Hmmm.

The old KAs used the Endura engine (yep a 1960's Anglia engine with overhead valves )

They have no hydraulic lifters, it's just pushrods and rockers. The the valve clearances are manually set. It could be a case that these need adjusting (a lost art in the modern garage).

BUT, these engine are known to eat camshafts, and the followers do wear out too. The rockers can also seize on their shaft due to blocked oil ways..Basically the problem stems from the engine gunking itself up from poor servicing....not helped by ford trying to make it go over 10,000miles without an oil change, when really it should be changed more frequently. So be warned. it "could be" a simple adjustment, or it could be a new camshaft or valve gear. and seeing that the cam is in the engine block and not on top of the cylinder head, it's a costly job, labour-wise.

How many claterry old MK1, MK2 and Mk3 Fiestas and MK3, MK4 and MK5 Escorts have you seen with their engine making a right racket? Well, many have the same engine, and thus, the same problem

ali
a class reply and certainly worth its weight in gold (or crappy ford engine oil )
It sounds as though this car has some faults which may or may not be expensive in the long term, so as she is my neice with her first car, I dont want her to buy a pup...she just aint got the cash to carry a costly car.
so cheers people.

I got my daughter a Ka as her first car and she loves it. But being a cautious old git I would be very nervous about using e-bay to do this. Personally I would pay slightly more and go to a local garage where you would get some limited Warranty and come back if it went wrong. If in her name she will probably be paying the same again for insurance? A bit too high mileage for me as well although it looks to be a genuine sale. When I drive my daughter's I always feel that I would be safer in an old "box shape" rather than something where you can't actually see the bonnet in front of you!! Is someone watching her bid? Don't let the blood rush to her head if the bidding hots up
