Where to go in Majorca?
I've asked this before - so appologies if anyone thinks its an Echo i am booking this next week.
I'm booking a holiday next week with the GF and wondering where is the nicest place to go in Majorca - Were too old to be bothered with Magaluf and all that nonsense (or should i say i am)
we just want a nice chilled out holiday but not in the middle of nowhere - somewhere that has a a few nice bars and restaurants
so could i have some nice recommendations on where to take the GF - oh and if anyone could recommend a nice hotel that would be a bonus as well.
Cheers

Cala Dor
Simply a class resort
Lovely Harbour [Chris Evans has his Boat Moores there]
Going there again this year to buy a place

I just came back from Fornalutx on the north coast up the road from Soller. We stayed in a fantastic hotel call Ca'n Verdura. The place is quiet but with a small town/village with 5-6 bars/restaurants. Deia is a 15 min drive where more flasher places including La Residencia hotel is. If you want busier and more bars and bigger hotel La Residencia is wonderful but expensive (alot of celebs go there).
This area is due north of Palma and in the mountainous area of the island and very much removed from the beach resorts. Depends what you want and what month you go. I love this area though.

We stayed at the Hotel Bon Sol at Illetas - http://www.ila-chateau.com/bonsol/. Really nice, but when we went (mid September) it was full of old people - at just over 30, we were the youngest there. It did mean we never had to wait to use the sports facilities

cala san vicente is nice, if not quite lot of germans, but is very quiet. thats near to porto pollensa. Didn't stay in porto pollensa but looked nice, if not a little bit 'turning chavvy' but that may be a bit unfair. great beach from what I saw.

Another vote for puerto Pollensa here. Lovely quietish resort with an excellent beach and plenty of bars/restaurants but not too much noise. Stayed at the Uyal hotel which is a typical Spanish family run hotel with a small pool and a certain elegance all of its own.

Some rip off merchants out there - Thomas Cook prices from 339 - lovely i thought, when you get to book it with all the occupancy add ons etc. 1000 quid for a feckin' week SC to Majorca.

lots of nightlife nearby if you want it and great town of Pollensa closeby for some chilled out evenings and great food.
stay clear of the south of the island around palma and you cant go too wrong really though

I go to Mallorca almost every year and have done for years.
For my money I would not go near Cala D'Or with a bargepole.
If you want somewhere low cost and beautiful there are a couple of basic hotels in Cala Mondrago. They are cheap but you need to add car hire - which is cheap in Mallorca. There are some great local towns and Cala D'Or is a ten minute drive if you must.
Puerto Pollensa has great range of restaurants. Pollensa old town is beautiful and has resisted the overwhelming tourist influence.
Slightly further down the coast is Alcudia - it is getting much better after a low point ten years ago. More popular with families now althiough there is a lap dancing bar (like you need to pay to see topless women in a thong - just go down the beach during the day!).
Soller and Puerto Soller are also both worth considering. Puerto Soller has fabulous scenery and a lot of restaurants, as well as a beach.
Cala Ratjada is also a good tourist resort although more French and Spanish than Brit and German (this is a good thing).
Upscale you can go to Deia and pop in and see Michael and Catherine
So pretty much East and North if you want quality. South and West if you want low cost with all the consequences especially as it gets busier.

we went to alcudia last october, got the holiday from teletext, paid less than £200 each half board flying from manchester. Few okay pubs there, but there is a another town a few mins walk down the road that has got loads of bars inc a linakers, and loads of places to eat. We had the best pizza ever there in an italian resteraunt, hand made thin crust it was to die for, still talk about it to this day!! (sad)
Porta Pollenca is very nice, went there a few days as the beach is stunning. In fact I rate the water quality and the calmness at Alcudia as the best i have seen (that includes beating the caribbean both mexico and the dominican where i have just come back from, even though both of those were stunning)

Best hotel on island is currently Blau Porto Petro
A v nice place onb the island with another top hotel is Dorint Hotel in Camp de Mar - its next to the golf club and villas owned Schumacher, Michael Douglas, Claudia Schiffer, Boris Becker etc.
Both are v pricey but if you want the best...
