I really fancy getting an LCD screen for my PC.

Anyone got anything BAD to say about them ?

The model I'm looking at is the Sony SDM 18.1" screen in Black.

You really need one with a DVI input (and a DVI video card) -- although a VGA-connectored one will work, VGA is analogue and the monitor is digital -- a bit pointless and you have to muck about with phase lock and stuff.

I looked at some in PCWorld and wasn't impressed with Philips or Samsung. Sony ones aren't supposed to be that good (I think they're trading on their reputation with CRTs), although AFAIK they incorporate some sort of intelligent scaling for when you're running at non-native resolution (e.g. a 1024x768 LCD will have 1024x768 pixels so if you run a game at 800x600 each 'dot' in the game will be one-and-a-bit pixels on the screen which can cause some odd effects). Sharp make their own TFTs unlike most of the others, CTXs are cheap. There's a review in this week's Computing that rates the Eizo ones, but I haven't seen them yet.

As with all monitors, you really should go and look before you buy, and then get one where you're happy with the image quality. IMHO image quality is everything -- features are secondary.

I have an NEC 18" TFT at work and it is fantastic!
Very bright, no focus or geometry issues.
Runs at 1280x1024 optimum.
I think you can get them for about £900 now.

A small point maybe, but only problem we have in the office is that you have to use high resolution or else it looks fuzzy (at 800x600 anyway) - but at high res people struggle to read the smaller writing on screen.

I have, or more to the point Suzy has a Logix 15inch Flat Panel display and it's great. Was pretty cheap, about 260 I think (but think that was trade price so guess it's more like 300 - 400 quid, dunno really). Trigger is right, at 800 x 600 it looks crap, I have it set at the highest it can handle which is 1200 x ??? I think something like that, not sure! tis not good for some people but fine for us, plus I'm used to this kind of resolution at work (dual 17inch CRT's at 1024 x 768 (no wonder I'm nearly blind )

Plus the saving on desk real estate is a wonder to behold. The MD's are now all using the logix monitors and I'm trying to persuade them that a pair of them on my desk would look really nice
