Medical exam - pre-employment
I've been asked to attend a pre-employment "special medical examination". Is this normal these days? What can I expect from this medical. Will I need to drop my trousers and cough?

Standard for most employers nowadays - helps keep their insurance costs down. Examinations vary depending on the type of work and your age but typically involve a quick once over - listen to your chest, check your blood pressure do a tracing of your heart (ECG), work out your BMI (body mass index i.e. how many pies you eat). Possibly a few blood tests depending on how much they want to know. As for dropping your trousers....possibly, depends what the person doing it's like

I had a medical which involved being weighed, height measured, hearing checked and a urine test to check for drugs and alcohol.
I think they'll expect no trace of drugs whatsoever, but I guess you could get away with a small trace of alcohol drank the night before or whatever - but if youve had a few pints for breakfast then they'd have something to say

It will not be very extensive at all.....no different to a standard medical for life assurance.
Assuming you are not old and have no history of illness it will be height, weight, reflexes, hernia check, urine and a load of questions. Simple.....i would be amazed if they do blood test/ecg unless theres a need.

this was for building nissan cars
only just scraped through the hearing test TBH, to many "raves" as a kid
same test for my next job building seats for nissan as a supplier, except it was not so arsey
i sat next to the woman for the hearing test (nissan was a sound proof booth ) and i could see her out the corner of my eye pressing the buttons for the test
strange how my ears "fixed" themselves in 1.5 years time

I work for an investment bank, and they drug tested everyone's urine
I know of a couple of contractors that had this test when offered permanent positions and failed, they were escorted off the premises by security as soon as the results came in.

I dont think this involves drug screened. The position is with a local authority, and I've just been told by an aquaintance (who is head of personnell with another local authority) that the unions wont allow drug screening atm. I'm not worried about drugs anyway but I am concerned that I'm slightly blobby and unfit

I wonder how legal these tests are now in light of the disability discrimination legislation?
Dismissing someone from (or failing to employ them for) a job could therefore automatically be unfair.
John.

In many FMCG companies the testing is used to define your initial health. Periodic testing later on will compare any detriment to your bench level.
Hearing, diabetes, eyesight, BMI.
It's due dilligence for insurance purposes and helps to prevent litigation against the employer later on.

Put me in mind of this !
Doctor Parkinson declared, "I'm not surprised to see you here.
You've got smoker's cough from smoking, brewer's droop from drinking beer.
I don't know how you came to get the Bette Davis knees,
But worst of all, young man, you've got industrial disease."
He wrote me a prescription. He said, "You are depressed,
But I'm glad you came to see me to get this off your chest.
Come back and see me later. Next patient, please!
Send in another victim of industrial disease."
