Southern hose pipe ban
Spent most of the day washing and waxing the car,it occured to me how much water i had used using buckets and watering cans, ran a small experiment and i reckon i used twice what i would have using the hose pipe alone. In the time it takes to fill one watering can i can easily rinse the car off,i used god knows how many can fulls.JAY

I'm going to wash mine tomorrow, I noticed a load of bird **** on the rear bumper. I think it's stupid I can fill as many buckets as I like yet can't use a hose whilst the water companies leak most of it into the ground. It's like bath versus shower if you ask me, for car cleaning at least.

totally agree...
called thames water, asked if i could use a pressure washer as the water is recycled in the system until you use it, on demand sort of.
But no not allowed to use it to wash the car, but could use it to wash my driveway??? eh what?? my driveway is fecking long
anyway washed my car last weekend and used around 7 buckets to rinse it.
2 buckets to wash it, another 7 to rinse it. another 2 to chamois it dry.
another 1 to wash the wheels and another 1 to rinse them.
so in total 20 buckets...a hell of lot more water used in my opinion than using the hose and pressure washer..but hey ho thats their decision..now to go out and jetwash my hugely long driveway and use (sorry waste) even more water.
oh and yes the walking back and forward was really good excercise

the best bit is when the guy at thames water said" when you fill up your buckets you can use a short hose pipe from the tap to the buckets"
right mate, so when i fill up my buckets, how the **** does the length of the pipe make a difference.??
jesus, they employ monkeys there
it's a shame i havent got a hot tub or swimming pool as you are allowed to fill them up as well ...now many gallons of water does a pigging pool take

I didnt realise you could only use a short lenght of hose, mines about 50ft and was directly behind car for the bucket filling process, and it kept slipping from my hand ocasionly and sprayed right under my wheel arches.JAY

The aim of hosepipe bans is really aimed at cutting out garden watering where hoses are left on for a couple of hours.
I've worked for a number of water cos and analysed flow data. It is very obvious when people come back from work and turn on the sprinkler in summer time - especially in very affluent supply areas.
Sunday evening watering is also a very use time for watering gardens.
Unfortuntely the ban doesn't view car washing as being different - even though it uses far less water.

The reason the ban only applies to private vehicles and gardens is because that's what the law says. So you can still use a hosepipe to clean your drive/patio/windows//boat and to fill your swimming pool etc.
Businesses can hose down their lorries/vans/coaches etc and private clubs can still water their cricket pitches/golf courses etc. Seems like a stupid law, I wonder if it means enough water is actually saved to make much of a difference?

I think whether or not using buckets rather than hosepipes is neither here nor there. The point is most people just won't bother cleaning their cars and thus saving water.
Do agree the whole thing is daft though. The water companies are awful at collecting the amount of water that falls and then they go and lose what they do
