However I did read a positive slant on all this the other day. Yes what happened is terrible and we all wish it hadnt happened. However the BBC went back on the the 20th anniversary of it happening.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/4843316.stm
It mentions that because the exclusion zone has been evacuated and no one dare venture in there, wildlife is coming back in abundance, even wild boar and such. I'm kinda glad something semi positive has come out of it

The accident should never have happened, and clearly there were no precautions in place incase of a disaster.
Could only have happened in a Russian nuclear plant to be honest.
The site's clearly anti-nuclear, but at the end of the day we are all big consumers of electricity, and it has to be generated somehow.
Burning fossel fuels generates lots of C02 which is warming the atmosphere. Nuclear creates radioactive waste (however only a small amount is high-level), 100% renewable energy simply isnt a realistic option. All the realistic methods have some negative effects - people need to understand that.

Noooo - the site, she didn't really just go off on a motorbike. She had permission and was escorted where she went etc etc.
I was being a little sarcastic !

Just imagine the effects of a nuclear weapon though. Think of those poor people in Hiroshima and Nagasaki!
Thats why I say that war is obscene. Before I get flamed, I spent my career endeavouring to ensure it never happened-successfully I might add!

The side-effects of war are obscene - the damage to innocent lives.
IMHO, War is a necessary evil. It is human nature to destroy everything it builds (we learn this from an early age - think aboua toddler building bricks, only to smash them down). There will never be peace in this world - someone will always want to rub someone else's race/country off the globe.
However, I'm sure the world would be a totally different place if instead of wars (both the right and wrong ones) opposing factions had have addressed issues over tea and cucumber sandwiches
I can well imagine Hitler, Saddam and the many others loving that.
The ultimate in lentil-munching/sandle-wearing PC rubbish. Thankfully, they will never be a position of controlling the "button".
Still, very graphic and thought-provoking piccies.
