Default Bird Flew in Scotland!

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/scotland/4881526.stm

Without the tongue in cheek title this is quite worrying
Wasnt worried about it really, but when you think about it the very few pandemics we have had killed a lot of people and this stupid government is no way ready for this outbreak.

From what I understand, it is only really a threat to humans when the human lives in very close proximity, and with almost constant exposure, to the bird, as in some Asian farming areas. As far as I understand, and hope.......

...and I have to point out that this country is one of the most prepared countries should a pandemic break out. A true influenza pandemic will de devastating regardless how prepared we are, but this is a non party political issue so criticizing the current incumbants about this is just a cheap shot.

Rubbish.

If this government had a decent immigration policy the migratory foreigners wouldn't be allowed in this country and we'd be safe !

Apparently the main reason for the increases in numbers of people with AIDS etc in this country is down to immigrants coming here with it! Cant blame them I guess - if you need expensive heathcare, and want it free - just come to the UK where the taxpayer will foot the bill for everything!

The bird flu hardly comes as a surprise - it only was a matter of time until it reached here.

The time to start worrying is when the news starts reporting a hospital somewhere is being overhelmed with people taken ill with flu, then doctors and nurses and other patients there start coming down it - that will trigger panic buying which is a UK favourite activity and then people will be refusing to go into work etc - the panic effects might be worse than the flu itself!!

Until H5N1 mutates and can be transmitted from human to human, it's business as usual, unless you keep birds of some description. In which case, make sure you can bring them under cover if there are reported cases in your area.

If it mutates and goes airborn were all dead!
Run for the hills (without birds) and stock up on petrol/food/water on your way

Whats worrying is some people dumping little Joey, their pet budgie, on the off chance that it may get bird flu...because its a bird. If people have this mentality then what will happen if **** really hits the fan?

Never mind dumping Joey - the half-wits that make up the male UK population will dump their girlfriends cos they're birds .

lol unless you **** a chicken with bird flu you should be OK.

If it mutates it will inevitably spread but if your young and healthy it should be no problem. Just sit at home under the blankets with some lemsip and nightnurse and sweat that flu out as theyd say.

Its the younguns and elderly that are at risk. I hope if it does come all these dirty pigeons will die and quite a few cats too. Im tired of them digging up my flower bed and generally using my garden as a toilet.

If loads of pigeons drop out of the sky with the bird flu the cats will no doubt get it, and foxes and then they will die and we will have loads of anmial corpses lying about which might breed more diesease.

Wonder how many cats will get abandoned. Oh and then theres the looting if people stop going to work and all the theft.

Actually it's almost the other way round

All age groups will be at risk, though children and otherwise fit adults may be most vulnerable.

Older people might turn out to have some residual immunity due to having been exposed to a similar flu strain earlier in their lives.

The illness is likely to hit sufferers harder than "normal" influenza, with more people developing severe prostration, viral pneumonia and complications or dying.

Government plans are based on a quarter of the human population being infected at some point during a pandemic. This could rise to 50% in a worst case scenario.

At least a third of flu deaths could be in the under-65s, compared with the normal rate of less than 5%

The virus is also expected to spread rapidly in schools, where infection rates of 90% are envisaged.
Ah well I know bird flu wont kill me. Id like to think im a higher level of human being.

Maybe then house prices will come down and I can start building a portfolio. Oh and we will have fun of looting ofcourse. I'll trade you this loaf of bread for your STI mate.

Yeah those are infection rates. So you will be lying in bed at home for a week. When it actually comes to fighting off the illness healthy young adults should be OK.

I'm not sure the 40 million that died in the 1918 pandemic would agree with you.

And if/when H5N1 mutates - we don't know how virualent it will be. It's usually the complications associated with flue that causes the problem, and while, if you are fit and healthy before infection you stand a better chance of recovery it isn't an absolute.

Personally until the mutation occurs, I'm not going to worry about it.

Can't be much fun though?

There you are with your mates in Denmark, feeling a bit low, so you decide to have a bit of a break in Scotland.

Off you go hoping to find a little love nest in the Highlands next to a Loch when your cold seems to get worse and you have to bail out into some stinking harbour feeling like death warmed up.

No bloody Scottish RSPCA to take you in for a bit of TLC and you can't even understand the language. I wouldn't want to say what happened on Friday night with youths leaning over the harbour edge

Well I hope they all get my cold - that'll learn 'em. Goodnight.

Define "simple". It was a type of flu (they have samples, they know the pathology) and tens of millions died. Until they know the specific strain of any future pandemic strain they can't start creating a vaccine and mass produce it. They might slow the spread with existing vaccines, but until then, anyone would be at risk, inluding healthy adults and children.

I think its just being overhyped. Some scientists are scared ****less and others dont give it a second thought. Either way its money money money for the pharmaceutical companies.
