hotels need you out so they can clean your room!!!
if however you put a dnd on the door, and you are staying for more than one day, they will generally (if you ask) clean your room around you.
you have to remember they have in excess of 2-300 rooms, it takes on average 15 mins per room.... you do the math

Most 5* hotels will let you stay a little bit later. If you pay for the house keeper to stay late and the breakfast chef to stay late you can sleep at my hotel until 2pm

You can pay for 24 hours but you said you diddn't want to pay
If you want more time in the room check in earlier
or just ask if you can sleep a bit longer but don't expect breakfast.

The simple answer to the question is: No, you cannot stay a full 24 hours. A "day" would be from check-in time until check-out time. Normally check-in time starts around 2pm, and checkout time varies, from 9am - noon. Though you can usually ask to extend check-out time, but it'll be 1pm at the absolutle latest, or has been so at the various places I've stayed.
It can be considered a bit of a con, as the daily rate does not equate to a full day's accomodation, but that's life.
If you want/need a full 24 hours then you'll end up paying for two days.

its only annoying when they kick you out around 11, but your bus/train/flight is leaving at 5in the afternoon and you have to lug the bags around while in the "**** im going home" state of mind
