Will aid be provided for the UK??
Just been anounced that we are officially having a drought
will we now have a live aid, and loads of overseas popgroups raising money to help us??
could this be teflons masterplan to get him out of the financial poo??
why dosnt / hasnt the gov made the water companys have a national distribution system, like electricity & gas..
or does profit for the elite spring to mind

Tory Tory Tory
The Tories privatised the water supply industry in 1989 with disastrous consequences for efficiency, investment in infrastructure and regional competition.
Profit for Tory supporters was their goal and it was pretty much achieved at the expense of the UK public

ok so it wasn't Mayor Ken who stopped the issue being resolved last year.

it must have been the torys fault for a decision made 18 years ago. Get with the programme

Thames Water, which supplies eight million people in and around London, has faced a flood of criticism because its ancient, leaky, under-invested pipes lose almost one billion litres of water per day — enough to flush a modern loo some 200 million times. But Thames Water has at least taken the positive step of planning a £200 million desalination plant in Beckton, the first in Britain to turn seawater into drinking water.
The Government’s Environment Agency says this plant is urgently needed, and Newham Council agreed the project. Livingstone, however, vetoed it. Why on earth would the Mayor of London want to kibosh plans to tap into an almost limitless supply of water for the city? Apparently because the plant would use energy, and therefore contribute to global warming — the fashionable argument against doing anything today. And mostly because Livingstone prefers to make people use less water, and pay more for it through metering.

The root cause of the problem was Tory scum selling off the family silver to their mates at rock bottom prices. I'm just trying to help us never forget that fact.

Exactly. 1 million extra homes in the Thames Gateway area is going to put a huge extra demand on Thames Water. A desalination plant is not the way forward - better utilisation of existing resources is. That means that Thames Water needs to reduce leakage from their system even more. It also means that homes should collect rainwater for toilet flushing and garden use.

Millions of £££ of cash thrown towards covering up the issue rather than solving it

The way forward is not just to build homes in an area that has no employment prospects and also doesnt have the natural resources to support them.
As to better use great idea but it is all more cost which isnt actually cost effective.
When you factor in the cost of water meter installation, reading of them, replacement (every 25 years at least) they arent this great saver of the world that is made out.
As usual this governments answer to every problem is to make us pay more! That thames water is still allowing 30% of water to be lost in leaks is incrediable.
Stoping projects because it uses energy means we had better throw away all our computers and other Technology based products then! electricity consumption is rocketing because we use more and more eletrical products, this is a basic fact of life so may be a desalination plant will be a help but until they can supply sufficient water to cope with the situation we have today they shouldnt be building more homes.

Leaks reduced : Tories get credit.
Leaks not reduced : Labour gets blame.

Don't see what the problem is with TW having leaking water pipe!! surely the water leeks into the ground then ends up back in the reservoirs again, no water is actually lost anywhere is it. I doesn't jsut disappear! some may evaporate but then gets rained back down again somewhere. Ther eis only so much water on this planet and none of it vanishes into space so it is all technicall ystill on teh planet in some lake or summat.

Oh, as for the 'energy' needed to run a desalination plant contributing to GW, if the money needed to implement Kyoto was used elsewhere it could provide adequate fresh water for EVEYONE on the planet ... over to you Red Ken ....

They could still do a lot better, though.
Recent figures put the loss at 8 BILLION gallons a year, between them
here in the fairly rainy North Midlands, I've reported FOUR leaks this last 12 months. Three took over 4 months each before being fixed, the fourth is still running
Anglian water!
And because I live in an area that pays Anglian for it's (nasty, chlorinated), drinking water, and Severn-Trent to deal with it's waste water, we pay over the odds for the two!
Certainly more than mates who pay entirely to one, or the other
Alcazar
