Glasgow - what to do/where to go?
#1
As a surprise for my birthday, my other half has got us cheap flights to Glasgow for the first week in November, so we're after ideas of where to go, what to see, and where to stay.
I know it is/was European Cultural Capital so there should be some interesting stuff.
Oh yeah, as an aside, she got the flights to Prestwick - not realising that it's not quite in Glasgow! Presume there's bus/train services to the city?
All help appreciated.
Cheers,
Steve

The Burrell Collection is quite a nice place to visit if you're into that sort of thing.
If you provide some guidance on what you like doing that might help
For shopping - all around the West End is good (look here). There's one really good centre (not like the shopping centres in every other city) that I'd recommend but I can't remember the name. If it comes to me, I'll let you know.

Have a curry at the curry cafe (I think) - the place near charing cross. Excellent and not expensive.
Now that's culture. And sophistication.
Sauchihall st leading into the big shopping centre is good for a mooch, too. And there's lots of good, free art galleries.

Cheers guys - good stuff so far.
Numptie - good point re our interests! Would help wouldn't it?
The Burrell collection looks good (especially if it's raining!)
We're both interested in all sorts of historical things - the people & culture of a place, architecture, transport (ok - that's mostly me! ), museums, etc.
Both like good food/drink (beer for me, wine for Mags) of all sorts - cheers for the curry pointer Nick!
Live entertainment's good, though neither of us is big into ballet or opera!
We like to do a fair bit of walking, though whether the weather will be kind to us remains to be seen!
Hope that helps?
Steve
BTW, Apologies if this sounds like a dating agency ad now!

Hi,
Lots to see and do.
Regular train service from Prestwick International to Glasgow Central, basically every half hour. Its a commuter route so busy at peak times.
http://www.scotrail.co.uk/route18.pdf for timetable.
Can't recall if Prestwick International is a manned station or not, but you can get your tickets on the train. Should be about £5 each single, depending on times.
For what to do, have a look at these
http://www.glasgow.gov.uk/html/whatson/wtop.htm
http://www.glasgow.gov.uk/html/about/giude/guide.htm
http://www.glasgowguide.co.uk/wnew.html
http://www.secc.co.uk/
Loads of good eateries, pubs, shops and the rest. Plenty of good hotels as well, all the major chains represented.
If you are there for long enough, you can easily do Loch Lomond and the Trossachs for some sight seeing. Get up to Glen Coe as well, its no problem for a day. Scenery is breathtaking.
Try http://www.visitscotland.com
The new science park and Glasgow tower should be open.

Hope this helps!
Cheers

Spider,
I can personally recommend Cafe India and Creme de la Creme for curries. Creme de la creme is a converted cinema so there is masses of space and an excellent atmosphere However, the South Indian Chilli Chicken is a bit spicey
Yex
ps: most black cab drivers know where they are

Glasgow is supposed to be only second to London now for shopping, so you'll not be stuck with that side of things
For shopping try Buchanan Street and Argyle Street. Princes Square (access from Buchanan Street) is probably the shopping centre already referred to and Buchanan Galleries is also good.
Sauchiehall Street is also good for some pubs, but most of the streets around Buchanan Street are good for pubs and restuarants. Absolute tons of nice pubs - too many to mention here, plus I'm making myself feel thirsty now
For eating and drinking the Merchant City is also nice.

Horseshoe bar for a pint and extremely cheap pie and peas
Cafe India for a curry. Go for the buffet and stuff yourself
Sauchiehall Street for a few pints of heavy in the evening
Glasgow is a fantastic city. Don't listen to people who have never been !!!
