I'll soon by travelling the following route:

Wakefield -> A1/Scotch Corner
A66 -> M6 (Perth)
M6 -> A74/M74 to Glasgow
M8 (Glasgow) -> A82 / A85 (to Oban)

Now I reckon I'll need to top up near to Glasgow, but don't really want to stray far from the M74 / M8 / A82. Anyone know of any Optimax stations, or do I try for Esso SUL?

The last petrol station selling Optimax will be on the M6, about 5 - 10 miles from the border. Once you are into Scotland, you'll find there are no stations selling Optimax.

The Shell station in Penrith (A66) also sells Optimax, but it's a mile or so off the direct route (have to go in towards the town centre).

Once in Scotland, you'll just have to use Super Unleaded fuel, which is readily available, though not at every petrol station.

I'm not sure if there is Super available in Oban itself, but there is definitely in Fort William (Esso), and I think also in Lochgilphead as well (also Esso).

Thanks mate. I may even try weaning the car onto SUL in the meantime. Is there much of a difference between Optimax and SUL?

Optimax is about 6p / litre more expensive than normal UL - what about SUL? Anyone able to help me please?

I would like to know as well.
I always use SUL, but is it cheaper to use Optimax + Millers?

Ed, i think you`ve got the wrong end of the stick m8

Unleaded = 95 RON
Super = 97 RON
Optimax = 98.6 RON

With imports ideally you need optimax, though Super unleaded is fine.If you need to fill up and can only get normal unleaded, thats the time you need to use Millers octane booster or equivalent.

Where can I get this octane booster? Anywhere online?

Not having the search facility is a real bummer

Optimax is cheaper than SUL in Essex
Optimax = 74.9
Esso SUL = 80.6

And i get better MPG on Optimax
Also a higher octane than SUL which is better for Imports

There is a shell garage actually in Oban, close to the Tescos supermarket, but I don't know if they sell Optimax. I used to have a diesel car, the last time I was up there.

Optimax hasn't been released in Scotland yet, so there will be no Shell garages sellign Optimax north of the border.

Not every Shell garage sells Super Unleaded either, though we did manage to persuade one garage to stock it especially for us on the Tour d'Ecosse weekend
