Default Any gardeners??

We're after a low maintenance garden and was thinking of gravelling a lot of it, and lining the edge of the garden where there's shrubs with wood chipping. I think we'll need a fair bit of both so does anyone know where's the best/ cheapest place to get gravel and wood chipping?

Try the local builders merchants, they should be able to sort you out at a much better price than B&Q/Wickes etc.

Jewson sell bark chippings in bulk, and gravel.

Best place by far are builders merchants bought by the ton bag.

Must be 20mm gravel if you don't want cats to sh*t on it, 10mm is just like a litter tray for them. Pay approx £42 per ton with free delivery inc VAT.

Wood chippings is best to look around your local garden centres for 3 for 2 deals of 4 for £18. These sorts of deals come around all the time where i live in essex. If you buy enough (about 10x 80 litres) I usually haggle an extra 10% off.

Wickes do cheap membrane to stop the weeds. Last time I think I bought 20m x 1m for about £10. And B&Q do a bag of 30 membrane pins for about £5.

Hope this is helpful.

Costco are great for a quality weed membrane, approx 70m2 for £25. Wouldnt bother with the pins myself as the gravel will do the same job for free

Agree use 20mm. Your builders merchant should be able to show you brochures, you can buy many different types/colours of gravel, just to add that additional finishing touch.

**** me and I though £16 per tonne was a high price when I got a 10T load direct from the quarry.

If you need a lot of bark, try and find out who supplies the garden centre. We got 4 tonnes deliveres for 50 quid - wasn't bagged - they just dumped it in the driveway. Takes ages to shift 4 tonnes of wood bark

Thanks for the responses!

Have tried our local builers merchants and they quote £35 per Ton for gravel but they don't supply the bark. Will definitely try local our local garden centres as well.

lpski1- Uphill ? The garden is sloping downwards away from the house. Will we need to level the bottom of the garden? Was thinking of having a circular lawn in the middle as well, will this need to be raised up and levelled out??

Careful the gravel etc doesnt end up in a pile at the bottom of the garden! You will have to glue each individual stone to the floor.
