Cancelling mobile phone contract?

Cancelling mobile phone contract?
Has anyone ever managed to cancel a mobile phone contract early?
I foolishly swapped from Orange to 3 and regret it. I didn't activate the phone in the first 14 days as I still had some credit left on the Ornage phone.
The phone itself was useless as it never held the charge for a full day even after an overnight charge and being plugged into a car charger.
The coverage was non-existent here in North Devon and even 3 have admitted that there is no coverage in this area. I have paid £55 per month and only managed to get a total of 45 minutes use in 5 months(ie an avarage of 9 minutes per month). The invoices have been wrong every month for 5 months with wrong tariff and wrongly exluding everything from inclusive tariff.
I contacted them (at the useless service centre in India!) before I went on holiday to ask if phone would work in Morocco and was told it would. Phone didn't work at all outside UK as they had "forgot" to activate the international roaming causing me to have to cut short my holiday in Morocco following the Daka Rally.
I've tried to cancel the contract and have returned the phones back to the shop. However, even though sim cards have been deactivated (at my request) they insist that I have to pay up for the full 12 month period as I only had the initial 14 days in which to cancel.
Has anyone else sucessfully cancelled? and if so how?

I tried getting out of an 18 month contract in Jan as Vodafone failed to make it clear my extra free mins and txts etc were only for 12 months. There was a buy out clause but it was more than paying the 6 remaining months and losing the 100 free mins per month!
I'm currently paying 2 contracts but for only £10 more than i would be with just the one

There have ALWAYS been heavy penalties for ending contracts with mobiles. You can stop them, but usually you have to buy your way out i.e. pay the remaining months up front.
One reason why I stick with a pay-as-you-go for personal use and contract through my work.
