Default can you get insurance for private dental treatment?

my old dentist has finally packed in his NHS practice and right on que my teeth have started playing up

there's a private practice up the road but short of taking out a mortage every time i go there, is there such a thing as a private dental plan/insurance to help cut the bill down a bit?

must confess to being spoilt on the NHS all my life and i don't have the foggiest when it comes to the private service!!

I'm with Denplan, www.denplan.co.uk

To be honest, they're a bit expensive now, I pay around £18 per month, it was about 9 when I started...it seems to go up at least a quid every year! For that you get your check ups, hygienists plus insurance. I know if I stopped paying that I wouldn't go for years and end up with a knackered mouth and a big bill!

£18 a month

Bloody hell!!

I pay £5:82 for a NHS check-up once a year and then work on the NHS - for example a Molar Crown for £95!!

Under DenPlan you pay for ALL your LabWork and Crowns!!

So, you are paying £18 x 12 = £216 for a £5:82 check-Up!!!

Yeah, I can see how THATS great value!!!

Ha Ha Ha - yes, I guess I will be soon!!

The DenPlan is excellent for Dentists - it pays them a regular commission every month .......... even if they do nothing.

Thats OK by me, but I was quoted over £20 a month (that was 3 years ago!!)

Had I purchased that deal then, I would have paid - at least - £900 by now .... I have not paid anywhere near that in treatment by getting treatment when and wherever I could!

An IMPORTANT point is that if you do NOT register with ANY Dentist whatsoever, then you are entitled to emergencey treatment on the NHS - maybe at a Hospital ................... the clever HOT TIP is do NOT register!!

Pete

fair comment pete and all the while you can get NHS treatment you'll be quids in, no doubt.

stepping into the world of private dental care though, £300 a year would probably only add up to a couple of checkups and a few fillings? lightening the bill over 12 months may be a bit easier to take.

I get two check ups per year, three visits to the hygienist plus it includes insurance too, should my teeth get smashed by a stick wielding pensioner for example, I'm covered!

Also, whatever he can do in his workshop is covered, fillings X-rays etc. You would have to pay for labwork but I was told this is discounted slightly.

I don't have a convienient NHS dentist, the one that I could go out of my way to get to is in a dodgy area and frankly I don't want to go there!

Yes, agreed ..... my feeling would be to pop that money into my own account and draw on it is I need it - if I don't then it's a bonus!

What does £5.82 buy you in the private sector?

I'm with Denplan too, how much you pay depends on your age and how good/bad your teeth are when assessed. I pay about £14 a month now and there are no hidden extra's at all.

You do realise that you will have to pay for ANY LabWork and Crowns and other stuff don't you????

It is NOT a Catch All Insurance Policy!

I pay £29 a month for me and the wife.

I've just had about 4 months of root canal treatment- which she found hilarious- but am quite pleased I had the DenPlan cover. I hadn't been for years and couldn't find a local dentist still taking on NHS work.

I have horrendous memories of the dentists as a kid, and this is the reason I hadn't been for many years. I do remember having fillings done before the anaesthethic took effect as you only had a ten minute NHS appointment.

Since I've been paying for the privelege I haven't suffered quite so much pain, with the exception of the root canal.

Anyway, he's just told me I need canal treatment on the other side as well. Once again the wife found that quite amusing, I'm hoping they'll pay to replace her teeth when I smash them all in for laughing at my pain

Only joking about the last bit..... I'm not keen on women with no teeth
