Hi-fi: Seperate Turntable?
SN,
I've been buying vinyl recently (to listen to, not to mix), and I'm finding my ancient early 90's Sony isn't really up to the job.
Can anyone recommend a seperate turntable set-up for me? I don't want anythign too flash, but not an el-cheapo one either...
Oh, and yes I'll be upgrading the rest of my Hi-fi soon too
Ta!

Another way forward is to keep your eye on ebay for an Origin Live turntable - they were sold as kits or more recently whole turntables.
I got a fabulous one with silver litz cables and an upgraded Rega arm for under £500. It has the ability of a £2000 deck easily.
Another option is the Clearaudio deck - a bit more pricey but very good if you want something new.

I have a pioneer turntable, its one of there direct drive jobs, with no belts or anything.
on the plus side its going cheap.
on the minus side it uses mmc cartridges, which are on the pricy side , but are better that the moving magnet variety
pm me if you want more info

The Axis has been accused of being a tad dull, with a shallow soundstage and restricted stereo. So much depends on your system however, plus tastes, expectations, listening room etc etc.
Whatever you buy, you should try and Dem before purchase. However, without a budget, it's hard to know what to recommend.

Check out the Pro- Ject Debut for around £125:

or the Michell TecnoDec:

You could put one together with a S/H Rega RB250 arm and a cheapie (but goodie) MM cart for less than £700 if that's within budget. Nice thing about quality (British) Turntables is the ability to upgrade as funds allow.
Cheers and good luck.

Nat makes a good point. It's often hard to tell the difference if you're not sure what you're looking (listening) for, or have a system that doesn't allow the front end to show what it's capable of.
I've a Linn LP12/Lingo/Ekos/Troika. Put it in my 2nd system and it's hard to tell the difference between it and the Michell TecnoDec/RB250/Dynavector 10x4 (cost about £1K). Place the TecnoDec in my main system and the differences are clear to hear, as it's a more expensive, revealing setup, and the Linn shows why it costs 4 x as much.
Remember to pay careful attention to siting the equipment. Turntables in particular, like specific surfaces. Some will like lightweight, yet rigid furniture, others denser, heavier items. Ikea still do a table that's an ideal starter for some turntables - costs about £15.
Cheers

I had one of these 10 years ago and it sounded better than my present Marantz CD player (i compared them before i sold it). You can get them cheap on ebay.Cost me £140. Got great reviews.I would say it still compares today with £200 cd players.

Thanks for the replies everyone, there's a fair bit to digest there!
The Project Debut is about the kinda level I'm looking for, but will have a read-up around the rest.
I've had a bit of a squiz on Richer Sounds website too, might just buy the lot as it all needs replacing when I move out the 'rents. Any other one-stop-shop guides which may be useful?
Cheers again, SN
