Default Hi-Fi Q. Noisy volume control

The volume control on my old Arcam Alpha 7 is knacked, makes a horrible crunching sound when turning it. Question is can I take it apart and clean it. If not where can I get a replacement volume pot from. Can't see anything online.

Cheers

Fop

Get some contact cleaner from Maplin and give it a good spray, if that doesn't help try somewhere like http://www.hificollective.co.uk/comp...tiometers.html

or google "high quality potentiometer"

no need to take apart. spray switch cleaner/wd 40 into the vol control from the rear and turn the control repeatedly to help clean the contacts. This usually cures a noisy control, but if it re occurs then it will need a new potentiometer.

If you need to change it, and have an idea what you're doing, I quite like for performance vs cost the Alps Blue Velvet pots, like here

Exclamation

Doesn't WD40 leave a thin layer of oil (to protect stuff from rust)?

Sounds like the last thing you should squirt into a HiFi

I used an air-blast aerosol (from Maplins - forgot the real name) and it helped on my NAD volume control.

Too late. The deed is done. It worked though!
