Why bid on ebay and push the price up?

Why bid on ebay and push the price up?
Why on earth do people bid for items on ebay days before the auction ends, thus pushing up the final price of the item? There is absolutely no point in doing so, surely? And yet you see items with 20 bids after 1 day already up for more than they are really worth.
Personally I wait for the last 10 seconds so no-one else can respond and then stick in my maximum bid, I almost always win the item, and I haven't upped the bid myself beforehand.
Who are these people? The sellers perhaps?

Agreed, this is infuriating, i assume it is newbies but not always, i usually watch an item until closer to the time then get stuck in with mins or less to go dependant on when the auction finishes

Also, you can still buy loads of utilitarian items for 'buy it now' prices that are half what you would have to pay in the shops.

If you bid the maximum you are willing to pay for an item, then it doesnt matter if you bid on day one or the last seconds if someone is willing to pay more than you.
I have a few auctions at the moment with lots of 'watchers' but no bids. They can't all win it in the last few seconds.

I agree - with the style of auction it shouldn't make any sense to wait and bid at the last minute, but it definitely does. I think what happens is that if people are outbid when they still have time to think about it they have second thoughts and bid more. I wait til the last minute to save these people from themselves!
