Lightbulb Dog training books..

Just ordered "The Practical Dog Listener" by Jan Fennell..

not really what I was after,

anyone read any good training books? had a german pointer for nine months now, he's calming down well but a still couple of things I want to sort out..

like not to pull your arm off when on the lead, (without using a halti).
to be calmer around other dogs, (generally he is ok, but snaps at some dogs ocassionally). to be calmer when people come to the house.

any sugesstions would be good,

thanks,

any book that is heavy enough will work for this purpose..

all you do is whack afore mentioned pup around head with said book whenever there is a transgression (it also works with young children too)

ps if it is a strangers brat mis-behaving in a supermarket que try this ( i have and i know it works)

lean down to the childs face level and whisper calmly to the bratt "if you don't stop that and behave, I will come round and murder you in your sleep"
always works and makes me grin as i walk away knowing i have created another trembling lower lip and given the little s*d nightmares

Jan Fennell's book will address the cause of both these problems

Does he snap at both dogs and bitches or just dogs?

My male Rottie loves the girls, but can be a bit of an **** sometimes with the boys.

As for being mad when people come round, thats the same issue as pulling you on walks, and again Jan Fennell's book will help

Concentrate on the whole pack ranking thing, you can miss out the dodgy stuff

You may never stop him having issues with boys, and his behaviour suggests he is a dominant male.

At the moment, he probably thinks he's the boss, hence the pulling and greeting issues

Our boy will now sit 10 feet back from the front door when I come in a night, and will only come over when I call him.

The girl, on the other hand, is a bit more pushy, but thats women for you

I got a year old German Shepherd a few years ago, she was 1 year old and had been ignored and kept in a shed since she was a pup. She wasn't nasty, but seemed untrainable.
I found a guy in yellow pages who was a dog trainer. Phoned him and explained the situation. I met him everyday for a week for 2 hours in a local park.

This dog went from wild, unable to respond to commands and couldn't walk on a lead to a crufts type star within 2 sessions. By the end of the week I could stand on the opposite side of the park and she would respond to hand signals! Really made a difference to her character too, she was lovely, now my bitch ex wife has her and I AM NOT BITTER!
