i went last May for 5 nights, had a great time.
Things i visited:
Empire State is a must.
Coney Island (remember the Warriors)
Central Park (you really could spend a week on that alone)
Statue of Liberty
Staten Island (at least take the ferry across) every 30 mins or something like that, its free.
Yankee's stadium for a game HOTDOGS HOTDOGS
Times Square, theatre land.
Little Italy for some good food.
APT nightclub (if thats your thing)
Walked across Brooklyn Bridge, takes about 30 mins, looking down on the traffic
Have a cigarette with the local Federal Reserve Coppers
Also had a Helicopter flight around NY and Liberty £60 p/p

Also visited where the WTC's stood, very eerie
Had a walk around Lower Manhattan business district, Battery Park, WTC memorial.
took a break watching people playing '1 on 1' in wire cages next to a big group playing hand ball in another, whilst some loony was preaching about the world ending the following day (think that was near NY college park)
ESPN restaurant, you can hire a lazy boy by the hour and sit and watch Sports on one of the biggest screens ive ever seen INSIDE a venue.

Walk around World Trade Centre site, then head down Wall St to Staten Island ferry for a free view of the NY skyline and St of Liberty.
If your going to do the Empire State, go during the day, and for Gods sake, wear somehing warm. Its breezy at 1000ft!

and give the subway a go too
let us know if you see the man walking ferrets in Central Park
if Art is your thing, take the subway to D.U.M.B.O (directions: A or C train to High Street, cross the park, left on Washington Street or F train to York Street, left at York toward Bridges, right on Washington Street)

Just found the restaurant where we ate one evening. Remember the Yanks like big meals, couldnt finish it all. Reasonably priced too.
Dont go in straight away, check the menu's for a while, usually a waiter will approach you and entice you in with free drinks or a discount (they was doing this at every restaurant). Very friendly.

Also ate here http://www.virgilsbbq.com/ in Times Square, your basic ribs and burgers type place with a sporty theme, you can sit at the bar downstairs and watch the sport and chat to the locals. Gets really busy, so expect to wait.

For the Empire State, try and go up half an hour or so before sunset so you can see it in the day, then the lights coming on, then in the dark!
The helicopter tours from the West Side are essential.
The Rainbow Rooms in Rockefeller is a great place for a cocktail, but you'll need a jacket and tie! (will lend you one if you need one!)

Be sure and do the "Cotton Club" in Harlem.
Then go visit Bill Clinton at his office in Harlem.
Also, talk a lot so the residents know you are from England.
Surprising how well they treat visitors.

Heliflopper ride is a must, ours went round Statue of Liberty/ground zero etc.
Another vote for Rainbow Rooms
When I went doing some normal stuff was really good like going to a diner for breakfast and going for a walk in Central Park etc.
Enjoy

When you're at Ground Zero, pop across the road (it'll be behind you!) for some of the best shopping in NYC at Century 21.

Grand Central Station, believe it or not, is really worth a visit. Be sure to check out the whispering gallery (can't remember what it's actually called) by the upmarket restaurant.
Ground Zero is amazing and if it doesn't bring at least a lump to your throat then you have no soul.
The Empire State Building is worth the visit but be sure to get the recorded guide because it's really very good.
Oh, and take some walking shoes. NYC is a great place for walking in...

The Metropolitan Museum of Art on Fifth and 82nd is good and can be combined with a stroll through Central Park.
Other public buildings, that may be worth a visit, are the Lincoln Center (sic) and the NY Public Library.
As for food, I would recommend the Gramercy Tavern, Union Square Cafe and Gotham Bar and Grill, all of which will cost approx. $70 per person. If you don't want to spend as much, Kitchen 22 is about half the price.

If you're short on time I'd recommend the Top of the Rock instead of the Empire State. The views are just as good if not better (including views of the Empire State) and there are virtually no queues (mid morning), whereas we had to queue for about 50 minutes for the Empire State at about 6pm.
USS Intrepid is also worth a look, as is a visit to Central Park. If you're down at the WTC site, I would do the Brooklyn Bridge and South Street Seaport. Queues for Ellis Island were massive as that's the same Ferry as the one that goes to the Statue of Liberty.
