AFAIK "white gold" looks white because of the nature of the alloy which contains a lot of platinum / palladium. I'm sure that selling regs stipulate that they have to declare if the goods are plated

I just love wikipedia!

My wifes engagement ring is white gold, she's worn it over 7 years and no sign of it going yellow

White gold tarnishes with age, somehting the jewellers omitted to tell us when we bought our wedding rings

They re-plate them (or whatever fancy term they use)

Depending on the quality, they'll need done once or twice a year at around £10-£20 a shot

Had we known, we'd of bought silver

I've got several white gold rings and have had them for over 10 years - they have not tarnished, in fact, they haven't even scratched.

Wink

Go to another jeweller and see what they say.
They'll say that they appear to be yellow too

I had a white gold ring a couple of years back which was looking slightly yellow, and wasn't as shiny as it was. Took it to the jewellers who said it could either be ultrasonically cleaned or sent away to be replated.

Yup, white gold is only temporarily so - that's why we got platinum

(The fact that a platinum pattern ring seems to be easily crushed and so needs expensive repair is another story )

Yes, white gold is usually rhodium plated, which wears off in time. If you think logically, 18ct white gold is 75% gold, so what could you add in the other 25% that would make it totally silver-coloured?

Wife had a nice white gold full eternity ring that I bought from a jeweller in Hatton Garden. Not only did it start going yellow, but after a diamond fell out of it on two occasions we insisted they remade it in platinum. It's been fine ever since.

but do we have a case for refund?

another point is my other half cannot were anything but gold she even told the lady behind counter, funny enough she has had a ever so slight rash under the ring wich she is now thinking is down to the nickel

i remembering asking the lady will they last many years as naturally there wedding rings, not once were we told they need replating

shes goin right on one lol i think maybe we will end up demading refund and buying yellow gold

apples, I also was told "every few years". If the rings have only been on your fingers for 2 mths, I'd say you could at least have them replated for free this time, even if you shouldn't expect them to stay white for life afterwards.

My engagement ring is brushed white gold. Had it nearly 7 years and the only time I have taken it to the jewellers is to have it re-brushed as it does go shiny (yes, we were told at the time) as does my wedding ring. Its been done twice in that time and no signs of it ever going a yellow colour.

Never had any problems with the colour of the white gold ring I've had for about 10 years. Its scratched a bit and lost some of its shine, but no discolouration

Same for me - I have a brushed white gold wedding ring with a central diamond, and central polished band and thats showing no signs of going gold either - needs to be re-satinised every year.

And mine is kept on for messing with the 205, so gets hammered a lot while changing gearboxs/engines etc

It wasnt cheap though, so maybe the higher quality helps.

Have a look around the "information" pages of http://www.18carat.co.uk/ and I think you'll find some answers and also for the shop person with the rash

My Nan left me her white gold eternity ring and it's God knows how many years old and it's still white.

My engagement ring is platinum. Only the best for me

Where did you get these rings? Some two-bit **** broker? Take them back and make him replace them with proper 24 carat gold rings, the purer and softer the better. My rings are all cast from my own ingots and I'd have it no other way.

As has been said before White gold is a coating over gold gold. It does need coating I believe on a yearly basis. I would suggest 2 months is a little soon for you to be noticing the yellow come through already. However it is your word against theirs that you weren't told that it will need recoating so I don't fancy your chances. I am sure you will get a free recover but as for anything else . . . .
