Angry Driving lessons for Subaru drivers

Selection of comments from here: http://newsforums.bbc.co.uk/nol/thre...20060125162341

Money well spent. Many of them are obviously in need of driving lessons, and if the state of disrepair of their vans is any indication, they can't afford them.
Next can you please do the same for taxi drivers, lorry drivers, Volvo drivers, Ford Escort drivers, Subaru drivers, BMW drivers, and any driver who has ever been seen driving while wearing a hat, anywhere, anytime.

It's counterproductive when people like [Mysturji] insist on stereotyping. Which is more important, the fact that I enjoy driving my Subaru WRX, or the fact that several friends and family members who have driven with me tell me I'm one of the safest and most considerate drivers they know? Statistically, white van man is one of the safest road users, while bus drivers are among the most dangerous.

Fair comment, but you're in the minority. In my experience a souped-up Subaru (most Subarus are souped-up) is almost always driven by a suicidal maniac.
Perception is everything, which is why I would never drive any of those cars I mentioned: I wouldn't drive like the people who usually drive them, but I don't want to be lumped in with them.

Aha....so that's the feejit that started waving and flashing frantically, when I overtook him and 3 cars in a row, who were following him at 30mph on a clear straight, dry national speed limit road

Yes, exactly. He's no doubt one of those people for whom anybody driving over 25mph is a "suicidal maniac". I had one this morning - I needed to change into FIRST gear to overtake them - just driving unbelievably slowly...

And of course, there's the "40mph everywhere" gang, who are no doubt living under the misapprehension that their driving is as safe as their choice of car...

Whats the roll eyes for? Seriously, Im not saying it to wind anyone up. The convoy from Chesterfield up to the Northern Big One 2 some of the Impreza drivers were just absolute idiots. So much so that one of our own nearly friggin well took me out and forced me off onto a slip road and I had to pull off the motorway to avoid him and a few traffic cones.

Im not saying theyre all the same, nooo sir. Definately seen many idiots in Imprezas though, and not all young lads as you would expect, almost as if some old grandads are trying to make up for the fact that they only had triumphs to raz about in when they were young

Sorry - just that the Welsh boys are really good. Went on a run with them the other week over the bridge and I couldn't fault the driving - kept a steady speed going, not one of us overtook any of 'our own' and the manner in which they were driving can only be described as sensible.

But I suppose there's always a minority.

If you want to wildly sterotype, why not just say "Every driver on the road is crap, except me"

The type of car is not a cast iron indicator, nor is the sex, age, skin colour or anything else. Making assumptions on any of these will not help you avoid accidents, keeping your eyes open and remaining alert on the otherhand may well save you.

OOh yes definetly plenty of idiots in Imprezas of all ages...like the one in the bug eye trying to race me a month back- doing all he can to pass me, diving infront of the car infront nearly swiping off their bumper, as the lanes merged back into one...Then "almost" not realising that there was a Gatso and standing on the brakes from 60+ back to 40mph limit - getting the back end twitching, as it was still unsettled from the last minute lane change.

And plenty more where he came from - no different to any other hot car

Or non-hot car, or non-car.

Well apart from the obvious waste of tax payers money to give extra driving lessons to one group of drivers who might be better or worse than other groups -
Why not employ the police to sort people driving or lack of driving ability out.
Interesting how many people state that should be some kind of periodic retest.

I've driven like an idoit in the past. Less so now but I'm sure I do things that other drivers will not like from time to time irrispective if I was in the right or not.

Of course it's not but Insurance companies have lower rates for different drivers for a reason.

Fact is a car like the Impreza or similar will attract people who like to drive relatively fast and enjoy driving. I would also say those type of people are likely to push the boundries of road use more than others.

OllyK is absolutely right when he says that it is wrong to stereotype a driver according to the car he drives. Obviously someone in a sporting type of machine is more likely to use its performance, but what counts is how he does it. Certainly pushing the boundaries is dangerously unfair if you don't know that the road is absolutely clear for as far as is necessary. Respect for other road users is also vitally important.
