Need some advice about a job interview
An internal position within the company. Temporary managerial position (standing in for a colleague off with illness)
The above isn't the issue.
The problem is that I enquired about it a couple of days ago, to be told by my boss that it would probably not be my type of thing due to my lack of experience in some aspects of the job.
I do actually agree with this, but I'm looking to climb into the mangerial aspect, and thought that even if I don't get it, I would have made myself known to be someone who's interested in progressing.
The job has already been allocated to someone who I get on with, and is MUCH better at this type of thing than me.
I thought no more of it until today, when my boss paid me a visit, suggesting that if I was interested in applying for the position, I should do so, as he had been informed that everyone who expresses an interest must at least be offered some type of interview (apparently).
He wasn't ar$ey or anything, and he did admit his error in telling me for want of a better expression, "not to bother".....
It leaves me with an issue -
the job's already taken. I know that - they're doing the ineterviews for the interviewee's sake. I actually don't mind this - the better person should get the job.
However, I'm thinking "should I even bother going to the interview tomorrow?"
plus points - as stated, it gets my name noticed with the powers-that-be
I get interview experience.
negative points - fruitless pursuit of a job that isn't mine any way
What would you lot do?
Any advice?
Dan

go for it, it cant hurt.
you will get some experience in interviewing, and you should be able to ask for feedback from the interviewers after they tell you that the job has already been placed.
on another plus point, going to the interview would get you atleast an hour off work

you could take them to court for not giving you chance to apply
other than that, interviews are always worth doing, the more you have the easier they become. Try and prepare for it as if the job hasn't gone and take it seriously, and you never know, if you're good enough in the interview........
dab a little speed before hand for good measure!

Raise the issue,
ask why are they still interviewing when the post has gone?
may not get you the role, but should open there eyes to the poor way its performed.
the best thing is, if your not sucsessful they have to give you feedback as to why not,
that should be interesting!!

Had the interview today - went well (I think!), although I started the interview off by saying that I knew the other candidate was much more suitable, but I was doing this for interview experience and to raise my profile within the company Didn't help that I was given the job description whilst walking into the interview room!! Still, I made them aware of that
Was told that I would have feedback this afternoon.
I go home at 12.30 on a Friday (interview @ 2pm) - haven't hung around for the feedback - I've probably blown it!!
Still, kinda hope I don't get it, as the other person IS better suited, and I just wanted to raise my profile. Sod's Law says I get it
Roll on next week

Dan,
re the feedback, if they give you feedback straight after the interview, i would complain, that is unprofessional.
they have to follow the normal route of formally offering the succesful candidate the job, and on acceptance, then give feedback to the internal applicants.
good luck you may do it, you never know

sorry, feedback was going to be later this afternoon.
Kinda academic really, as to receive feedback, you really need to have two people - the giver and the receiver
Nice one though - will keep you all posted

Similair thing happened to me recently,i went for the interview and afterwards the manager said she was surprised how well i did.Now i've made a mark.
Let them know that in future you'd like to be considered for any other internal vacancy, but dont be arsey about it.You've already said the other person was better qualified.
TIP.
" went well (I think!), although I started the interview off by saying that I knew the other candidate was much more suitable".
You shouldn't say that,it makes you look like you lack confidence.

Nice one Paul - kinda thought that, but the statement wasn't a confidence thing (the company knows that lack of confidence isn't an issue with me ) but moreso, brutal honesty.
I know that some management don't like being told the truth, but some of my music-industry jobs were so shrowded in (paranoid) secrecy, that I sowre to myself that honesty and straight-talking would be high on my list of virtues/requirements in the future. It hasn't served me wrong so far.
But I do take your point though.
