This has happened to me, though not with such large volumes of fish.
It was in the Amazon jungle in Peru, actually a tributary to the Amazon. The fish get excited by the throbbing of the outboard motor and start leaping out of the water. I was hit full in the face by one of these which we were told called Arawana.
In an overloaded open boat, in the dark, with people panicking and jumping around and rocking the boat so much we were taking on water, in a tributary which also had red pirhana, it was quite an experience
