Britain is 21st in world rankings in happy places to live, beaten by "3rd world" countries who we give economic aid to. I'm depressed now!

It is true that this appeared to be a much happier place in earlier times when the standard of living was appreciably lower than it is now. People used to be actually smiling when they were out and were more likely to be friendly towards a stranger especially if they were polite such as holding a door open or just moving out of the way to be helpful.
All seems to have died the death now-more's the pity!

The idea that money does not create happiness is supported by a growing body of evidence. Research by Andrew Oswald, an economics professor at Warwick University, has found that marriage has a bigger impact on how long someone lives than income.

I think it has more to do with the love of whingeing and wallowing in negativity that exists in the UK, rather than an accurate portrayal of existing happiness levels.
