Default Blasted cold/flu........

Had this for 5 days now, 24/7 headaches that the best painkillers don't completely shift, temperature up and down like a yo-yo, coughing so much it hurts like fek in the centre of my chest and in my lower back.

Anyone else had similar recently? How long will it last?

Al-cough-zar, (and no, I haven't been to Asia or any chicken farms )

Just going through mine now Boo!

Still, if it gets any worse, might get some time off work

Sorry you have caught it Alcazar, My friend is still coughing after 7 weeks, but his wife got over it in two weeks.

Hope it clears soon anyway, better stick to the medicinal Scotch etc.

He went onto antibiotics and said it certainly has helped.

Whatever GP handed them antibiotics should be ashamed.

The common cold is a virus, not a bacteria. Antibiotics won't do anything. This is how we are in a mess with hospital infections. People becoming immune due to freely & wrongly prescribed antibiotics.

Hmmmmmm.......I had something similar three years ago in France. The French lady doctor who looked at me, (when I'd taken my eldest in for a swelling in his neck), told me I had bronchitis, and if I DIDN'T take the antibiotics she was going to prescribe, I could have pneumonia the next day or so. I think if your lungs get infected, antibiotics ARE needed. It's up to a doctor to decide if they are infected or not, isn't it?

Imlach,

He was suffering from an infected throat stemming from the earlier virus infection and the antibiotics are helping to clear it up.

yesterday I was awful, temperature was fluctuating like, well something that fluctuates alot, woke up at 4pm yesterday roasting hot, turned the heating off and picked the misses up from work, I was sweating, misses gets home and tels me the house is freezing cold, I was boiling all night long, get in bed and I was stone cold yet when I snuggled up to the misses to get warm she thought I felt hot. My back is killing (this is what Im struggling to put up with though) sat at my desk is no fun at all. Headaches all yesterday, feel fine today though apart from the sore back. Strange.

I've had the usual 'bunged up' feeling, and now my throat feels like it's on fire!

Other halfs granparents had it before Christmas for 3 weeks, went to the Doctor because she thought she was dying it was so bad , and was told it's not 'flu but a virulent bug which is doing the rounds.

Has anyone else had sickness/upset stomach with it??

Ah - the Medical Oracle now speaks

Whatever GP handed them antibiotics should be ashamed - NOT NECESSARILY - depends if there is subsequent basterial infection following the 'cold'

The common cold is a virus, not a bacteria. - TRUE

Antibiotics won't do anything. (for a viral infection) - TRUE

This is how we are in a mess with hospital infections. NOT TRUE - antibiotic resistance is a complex phenomena, and while unnecessary prescribing contributes to resistance, poor hospital hygiene, pt's not completing antibiotic courses also contribute significantly as well as natural evolution of bacteria all contribute.
