Have taken a plan with PetPlan but who do you guys use or think is the best?

Personally we have used PetPlan for a few years now and haven't ever had any problems on claiming for even the smallest thing... and they have good tie-in's with Vets so they tend to do the paperwork, no doubt the vets get a nice kickback but as long as we don't have to pay out we're happy.

One thing worth noting when you shop around for pet insurance is that many policies don't allow for claiming for a conditino more than once, i.e. if you make a claim this year for a condition and it comes back next year you won't be able to claim. PetPlan DO allow you to claim time and time again for the same condition.

And one other thing is that many policies will only cover you for the first 12 months of any claims for long term medication. Again PetPlan DO allow you to continue claming.

Hope that helps, summing up PetPlan is a very good deal indeed...

We had 3 dogs and insured them through PetPlan I think. But then I worked out how much I would be paying over say 12 years and decided to stop paying and take the risk on ourselves. If we took on a puppy then I think I would insure for a year as the first year can reveal any health horrors which might be expensive, like a friend who found their puppy had serious hip problems which were mega bucks to fix (should have taken it back to breeders but had grown too fond of it).

btw, our dog is insured with More Than. The miises looked around at time of purchase and they offered what she felt the best insurance, no 12 month termination of treatment & a good price

I use Petplan. Made one big claim recently and they didn't quibble...

Petplan all the way. Have had all the cats insured with them for some time now, and they never argue about claims (have had a few big ones - 15.k +). Vets actually told me not to change as they prefer to deal with them because they will discuss things with the vets before deciding if they will pay out, and not just read the rules from a book like most other insurers.

When I was looking round about a year ago I found Marks and Spencer offered what I considered to be the best all round deal. Can't comment on what they are like 'cos I haven't had to claim.

Direct Line for me although I don't use them for anything else. At the time it was the best (not cheapest) policy for our mutt.
Premium went up a bit the next couple of years but stayed with them.

My brother works for Petplan and he said they are the best ones, but they are also the most expensive

I used Tesco's for my dog, and they were good. He died a few days ago unfortunately, but they paid for the tests and treatment for the cancer that took him within a few weeks of discovery (£1500+).

Some policies (like Petplan) have a claim limit per year. e.g. £3000. This won't go far if any orthopedic work is required. £5k to £6k a year would be a safer bet. Other policies have a claim limit per condition for the life of the pet. Sainsbury's do one like this where the total limit is £6500 per condition.

It's also worth making sure dietry perscriptions are included. One of our cats has Renal failure and is on a special (re. expensive) diet.

Colin, I think I read that you also have a Boxer puppy. These can sometimes be prone to skin conditions, so again make sure this is included.

Also be aware that most policies exclude dental work these days.

We've got an 8 week Boxer puppy and are going with PetPlan. My wife (a vet) has never had a problem with them. (and she hasn't had any kickbacks either )

Cheers for that Steve, makes me feel a lot easier, at the moment we have Ellie our 10 week old Boxer(with a Tail) with Petplan but wanted to hear what other people had or any problems, we had our other Boxer Holly with petplan and she was white, but really never had any skin problems with her, and she lived till she was 11 and sadly died from a brain tumour Thanks again.

Pet Plan all day long, most of the others [long as you keep the policy going] cover the dog for life and will pay for treatment on condition, which they may have for life, it may have changed but when we were looking none of the others do, year to year.
