Default Freeview: no signal at all, is there any hope?

Today I went out and bought a Freeview box. Although it pauses for a while on a couple of frequencies when scanning, it doesn't actually find any channels at all. Try a manual search and the signal strength meter shows just one tiny bar and describes the signal quality as 'none'.

I have a roof mounted aerial with a booster which feeds 4 TVs. The aerial points at the Hannington transmitter, which has analogue transmissions on chans 39-66 and the digital multiplexes are on chans 40-50 - so the digital transmissions are within the range that my existing aerial should pick up.

I tried adding a second booster amplifier to the UHF signal, but it didn't make any difference at all.

Any experts have any bright ideas, or should I just give up and take the box back or flog it on Ebay?

Boosting can make things worse. The analogue signals (tv, radio, cbs etc.) overload the box.

Try without the amps.

you need to check that your area can support freeview first...

Sounds like you need a new antenna and ct100 sat coax...

You need a high gain antenna for freeview, wide band.. unless you are close to your local transmitter or high up with nothing in the way your existing antenna would be ok..

but alas like most of us a new antenna such as the Televes dat45 is what you need mate.. about £45 + new coax + fitting..

You'll probably have to get a new co-axial cable installed.

The reception depends on the strength of signal coming down the line and the further your TV is from the antenna the poorer your chances.

Boosters are a waste of space - I have one lying in a cupboard somewhere and ended up getting cable fitted.

Just my experience.

Thanks everyone, I gave up and took the box back for a refund (with no questions asked - thanks Asda). The box may only have been £30, but the aerial upgrade (with no guarantee of success) looks expensive
