Question can I drive my car with no tax until V5 turns up?

haven't recieved my V5 from the DVLA yet, but there is no tax on my wagon, anyone know if I can drive it until I get my V5, or do I have to wait? cheers!

You could have purchased road tax before sending the V5 slip off to DVLA.

Not sure if you can drive without it.

It's illegal if it's on the public road and you aren't displaying a valid tax disc (even if you purchased one and forgot to put it in the car).

Driving will merely increase you chances of getting caught.

Depend on what sort of copper catches you (and if they do).

Don't speed or accelerate in a manner that will cause suspicion to an orificer and you'll probaly be OK !

yes you can use the green v5/2 slip if its less that 2 months old. you should be able to tax it at your local dvla office if you dont have the log book.

I wouldn't drive with no tax these days. They have databases of who doesn't have tax and ANPR cameras all over the bloody place.

If you must do it, get yourself some false plates like everyone else does

(disclaimer: don't do this)

More often than not, if a car has been bought trade and they've cashed in the tax (which many dealers seem to do these days), then the database will still show the car as taxed for a couple of weeks - when I bought my cheap diesel runabout and taxed it on the tear off slip, the woman at the post office told me "but it's already taxed according to the computer" . . . .

However, as noted, the best thing is to tax it on the remaining slip from the V5. Many people will end up driving it untaxed from picking it up to the nearest post office to tax it. If you can show you've just bought the car I think you'd be unlucky to be nicked, but it is still technically illegal. I believe the only time it is technically legal to drive an untaxed car on the road is to and from a booked MOT test (if the car has been declared off the road for sometime, you need to get an MOT before you can buy the tax).

Indeed, no decent copper would do you for this.
An ANPR2 camera would though. 80 quid fine in the post a few weeks later.

Which is of course assuming (a) that the car isn't still showing as taxed on the database (per my post above), and (b) at the time the DVLA etc know you own the car, as until you've bought it, you won't have sent them the V5 pointing out change of ownership.

Also, say there's a picture taken at 10am on the day you bought the car, very difficult to prove a few weeks later whether you picked up the car at 9:30 or 10:30.

Not condoning the idea of driving without tax, just that in the situation I mentioned above, it's common and I don't believe it is immoral and you're fairly unlikely to get done IMHO.

Indeed, if you're on the database you're fine, and if it's the same day you bought it you may be fine. I too don't beleive it's immoral especially since you end up paying for the entire month anyway! I've done exactly what you have advised enough times in the past while waiting for insurance documents to come through and whatnot.

I am simply pointing out that with the new bloody ANPR2 cameras you have a higher risk of getting done for it than you did this time last year

Put landrover back on road for winter. - MOT on my landrover Friday. Brought back Saturday with MOT. Insurance documentation turned up Saturday in the mail. Intention to Tax Monday. Car blocked in Sunday so used Landrover to get Sunday paper 2 x 2.5 miles. Passed police car on way back. 30 minutes later police car in my driveway and reported to Procurator Fiscal for driving without tax. I produced all supporting evidence and explained what happened. No, policeman had quota to make.

Unfortunately, it changed my view on the traffic police so much that when i witnessed an accident i phoned for an ambulance for those injured but refused to call the police.

When i bought my C class, i didnt notice the tax had run out until it went to get traded in, it was 2 months overdue I had been all over th country with it, i didnt recieve a reminder & as of yet havent had a letter for back tax, its only been a few weeks though.
I was shocked when the salesmen pointed it out.
Only thing i can think of is that i purchased a Private reg for it, went through all the right channels & it hasnt updated on the tax database
