Rented this out and watched (most) of it yesterday. Still brought a chill to my blood even though it was made over 20 years ago. Scary that it was something that many people thought may actually happen. Quite a disturbing docu/drama...
Will try to rent out "The War Game" to add to my apocalyptic viewing (still waiting for "By Dawns Early Light" to become available)...

They made us watch Threads at School!
Still paying for counselling!!! ;-)
Everyone who advocates maintaining a nuclear deterance (as I do) should watch that film, we must never be allowed to get complacent about just how terrible these weapons are!!

Bought a copy of Threads off Amazon last year as I never saw it when it was first shown in 1984. Excellent film, very thought provoking and gritty. Must have been very scary when it came out at the height of the Cold War, when the events depicted seemed like a real possibility. I especially liked the way excerpts from the governments "Protect and Survive" documents were portrayed via radio and TV broadcasts. This of course was what would have happened: the government planned to take control of all broadcast media to play these adverts continually if events had reached the stage where there was an "imminent danger of nuclear war".

Wasn't it set in Sheffield ?? It's a long time ago for my memory !!
As a child of the late 50's..... by 1984 the Cold war was long gone but it was a timely reminder of what could happen !!
About 2 years earlier "when the winds blow" was released by Raymond Briggs .......much better than the snowman thing !!
My 9 year old has no conception of nuclear war and Mutual Assured Destruction....thankfully !!

I tend to think of the cold war being the 50's and 60's.........Cuban Missile Crisis, Korean War, bombers carrying nuclear weapons (and then crashing), personally worrying that at anytime I might be incinerated.
By 1984 the Falklands war had finished and I was more worried by the IRA mainland bombing campagne.
It is a good film though !!

The cold war officially finished when the Berlin wall came down in 1988 (i think).
Up to then, Britain still had its forces on alert incase the Soviet forces came over the borders of West Germany.
